Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Thanks to a potent power play and a once again stellar performance from their goaltender, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors have clinched 6th place in the Eastern Conference with a 3-0 road win over the Oshawa Generals in Ontario Hockey League action on Saturday night.
Mika Partanen, Dylan DeMelo and Spenser Cobbold all scored power play goals for the Majors, who finished 3-for-4 with the man advantage. Brandon Maxwell stopped all 25 shots he faced for his sixth shutout of the season, and third in the last five games.
The win was the Majors fifth in a row and guarantees they finish sixth in the East and will meet the Barrie Colts in the first round of the OHL playoffs. Game one of the series goes Thursday night in Barrie while game two takes place on Friday night at the Hershey Centre at 7:30 p.m.
Majors Head Coach/General Manager James Boyd thought his club responded well during its last road game of the regular season.
"We played a very solid defensive game and that made us a frustrating team to play against tonight. It was a great team effort and we got contributions from throughout the lineup. It's a great way to head into the playoffs and it gives us a lot of building blocks to use heading into next week."
The Majors opened the scoring when Partanen notched his 22nd goal of the year on the power play from Trevor Carrick and Riley Brace at 3:06 of the first period. DeMelo gave the Majors a two goal lead with just 24 seconds remaining in the period, once again on the power play, from Brace and Partanen.
After a scoreless second period, shots were 6-6 in the first 20 minutes of play, and 11-7 in the second in favour of the Generals for a 17-14 total after 40 minutes.
Cobbold gave the Majors a 3-0 lead with his team's third power play goal of the night, assisted by Kristoff Kontos and Carrick at 7:33 to seal the win for the Majors.
Third period shots were 8-7 in favour of the Generals for a game total of 25-20.
Kevin Bailie allowed three goals on 20 shots in goal for the Generals, who were unsuccessful in their three attempts with the man advantage.
The Majors have one game left to their regular season schedule before they face the Colts in the first round. The Niagara IceDogs will be their final opponent of the regular season on Sunday at the Hershey Centre at 2 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca or in person at the Hershey Centre box office.
