Majors blank the Colts 4-0

It's back to square one in the opening round of the OHL playoffs for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and the Barrie Colts.

Riley Brace had a goal and two assists and Brandon Maxwell made 26 saves for the shutout as the Majors blanked the Colts 4-0 in Game 2 of their best-of-seven series Friday night at the Hershey Centre, tying the series at 1-1.

Game three in the opening round series is Monday night at the Molson Centre in Barrie. Game four is back at the Hershey Centre Tuesday at 7 p.m. Barrie took the series opener 3-1 at home on Thursday night.

Spenser Cobbold, Kristoff Kontos and Stuart Percy scored the other goals for the Majors in the chippy affair, which saw 90 minutes in penalties called, 49 of them to the Colts.

"It was good physical hockey, the kind of hockey you like to see in the playoffs," Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "I really liked the way we bounced back after losing game one."

Mississauga dominated the game, out-shooting the Colts 41-26, including 17-7 in the opening period when Cobbold scored the lone goal at 9:00 for the first period's lone goal.

"I liked our jump early and their goalie made some great saves to keep them in there, but we didn't get discouraged," Boyd said. "We have a lot of guys who have played in the Memorial Cup in our lineup and that makes a great difference for us.

"We were ready to compete tonight from the drop of the puck and that's full credit to our core leadership group. We kept our composure all night and our perseverance was the difference in the game."

The Majors blew the game open early in the second period, scoring three times in a span of 2:33 to make it 4-0 and chase Barrie starting goalie Mathias Niederberger from the goal in favor of Alex Fotinos.

Percy scored at 1:03, Kontos added another on the power play at 3:03 and Brace finished the onslaught at 3:46 to give the Majors a four-goal lead.

That was it for the scoring the rest of the game, as the Majors did a good job shutting down the Colts offence and limiting scoring chances. Maxwell was sharp when he needed to be to continue his hot play, getting his sixth shutout as a Major, including five in the regular season.

The heavy penalty total resulted in eight power play chances for the Majors and they scored once on the power play, while the Colts failed to connect in their four extra man opportunities.
