Majors Bear down to Top Fronts

December 16, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors scored a big win on the ice - and a big win for local charities - on Friday night at the Hershey Centre.

JP Anderson made 34 saves as the Majors scored a crucial 3-1 win over the Kingston Frontenacs, keeping the Majors in eighth place in the Eastern Conference standings on the same night where local hockey fans donated more than 1,800 stuffed animals to local charities on the annual Teddy Bear Toss Night.

Dylan DeMelo had a shorthanded goal and an assist to lead the Majors (15-14-1-3), while Derek Schoenmakers and Spenser Cobbold had the other Mississauga goals. Darcy Greenaway scored the lone goal for the Frontenacs, who remain in last place in the East in their final game before the Ontario Hockey League's annual Christmas break.

Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd was pleased with his club's effort in the win, which snapped a three-game losing streak.

"I thought we played with some emotion and played a good physical game," Boyd said. "Kingston played with a lot of life too and I thought it was a pretty good hockey game.

"We need the points with the standings so tight and anytime we win a game against Conference opponents at this time of year it's huge."

After a scoreless first period, Cobbold opened the scoring at 2:11 of the second period, floating a shot past Kingston goalie Igor Bobkov to send the teddy bears reigning down on the ice.

Bobkov couldn't quite squeeze the puck and as a result local children's charities will benefit by having all of the donated bears distributed to local families in need in time for Christmas. Thanks to Canadian Tire, the monies raised from the sale of the stuffed animals in the arena helped raise funds for Sleeping Children Around the World as well.

Kingston tied the game on Greenaway's goal at 12:21 on a one-timer from the slot, but DeMelo scored what turned out to be the game-winner shorthanded just over a minute later, Mississauga's league leading 12th shorthanded goal of the season.

Schoenmakers gave the Majors some insurance with his 13th goal of the season at 4:50 of the third period to complete the scoring. Both teams had 35 shots on goal and Anderson was very sharp.

"I thought JP was great tonight and last night (in a loss to Barrie)," Boyd added. "It's good to see him rewarded for his efforts, he's been very good."

Mississauga hosts the Sudbury Wolves Sunday at 2 p.m. in their final game before the OHL's holiday break. The Majors wish all their fans and supporters the very best this holiday season and send hopes for a great 2012 to all of you!

Tickets for all home games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours.
