Sanford Mainers News Release
The Sanford Mainers are now on the path of the well known quote, "It's not over, until it's over." With the Mystic Schooners losing Tuesday night and the Mainers defeating the Bay Sox, they pulled within 2.5 games of the final playoff spot. On Wednesday, the Mainers defeated the Ocean State Waves in a thrilling 6-5 victory. The Schooners lost again tonight putting the Mainers only a game and a half back of the final playoff spot.
Mainers starter David D'Errico got his second start against the Waves. Much like the first time, the Waves jumped all over D'Errico in the first inning scoring twice to take an early 2-0 lead. Caden Bailey reached on a fielder's choice and then advanced to third on a double to center by Mike Gerber. Shaun McGraw plated Bailey on a sacrifice fly. Nick Sebastian singled to left to put runners on at the corners. Christian Muscarello then singled through the left side allowing Gerber to score the second run of the inning.
In the top half of the second, the Waves added another run. Walker Moses dropped down a bunt single down the third base line to lead off. Reed Gamache also put down a bunt in a sacrifice fashion forcing Moses to second. Evan Ocello then doubled down the left field line allowing Moses to come in and score.
The Mainers got themselves on the board in the third scoring once. Billy Bereszniewicz singled to left to start and then stole second, but was able to reach third when Sebastian's throw came too low and skipped into left field off the bag. Bereszniewicz stood at third with two outs, but was able to score when Troy Black reached on a fielding error by Gamache.
It was the fourth inning that the bats came alive for the Moose. Daniel Nevares hit a one out double to left and then scored when Matt Verrier lined a single of his own to left, but Moses over ran the ball allowing Nevares to trot home. Verrier advanced to second on the play and then scored when Nate LaPointe swapped places with him on a double down the right field line. LaPointe went into third when Scott Heath grounded out, but also crossed home when Bereszniewicz hit a two bagger to right field. The game was tied at three, but Robert Wayman kept the inning going with a single to left allowing Bereszniewicz to score.
The Mainers had a 5-3 lead going into the seventh, but Gerber put the Waves back in the hunt when he blasted a two-run home run to right field into the trees.
Just a half inning later, the Mainers responded with a run to retake the lead. Black got his first hit of the game with one out and then stole second as Anthony Papio struck out. Nic Wilson drew a two-out walk, but Black was able to steal third in the process. Nevares came up big again with a two-out line drive into center field allowing Black to score.
Iannick Remillard came into the game in the eighth and was able to close it out in the ninth, but not before the Waves made it interesting. Remillard got McGraw on strikes, but then hit Sebastian. Muscarello lined out to Black at short for the second out, but Dalton DiNatale kept the inning alive with a single to left. It was left up to Michael Sherburne to tie the game up for the Waves. He worked a full count with two outs and was called out on strikes to end the game. Sherburne was immediately ejected when arguing the strike call with the umpire.
The Mainers will hit the road for a split double header on Thursday. Game one will be played in Newport, Rhode Island against the Newport Gulls at 1pm followed by the regular scheduled game at 6:05pm against the Mystic Schooners in Mystic, Connecticut. Scott Heath is expected to get the start for game one.
