Sanford Mainers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers played a doubleheader against the North Adams Steeplecats on Friday night at Goodall Park. In an extra inning affair, North Adams took the first game 4-1 after eight innings, and the Mainers won the second game 7-3 to split the twin-bill.

Alex McKenney (Maine) started the first game for the Mainers and was able to exit the game only allowing one run in five innings. He scattered four hits, one earned run, three walks and five strikeouts.

North Adams took the lead on a single and double in consecutive at-bats in the fourth inning to make the score 1-0. Steeplecats starter Brian Zeldin only allowed one hit in his five innings of shutout work.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Mainers last at-bats started with a bang as Marty Higgins (St. John's) smacked a game-tying home run over the left field wall to even the score at one. As the game went to extra innings, North Adams jumped out to a lead with three runs in the top of the eighth, which turned out to be enough in a 4-1 win.

In the second game, the Mainers sent Kyle McKernan (Virginia Tech) to the mound to salvage a split of the day's games. McKernan rolled through his five innings, only allowing two hits, one unearned run, one walk and striking out eight North Adams batters in a winning decision.

Sanford jumped out to an early lead by scoring three runs in the second inning, as Higgins, Mitch Moralez (Utah Valley), Evan Sleight (Rutgers) and Pierce Gallo (Clemson) all had hits in a row. Sleight brought home two on his single, and Gallo brought home one on his single.

After allowing one in the third, the Mainers were able to score a pair of runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to take control of the game. Sanford was led at the plate by Higgins (2-3, R, 2 RBI), Moralez (2-3, 3 R, 2B), Sleight (2-2, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Gallo (2-3, 2 RBI).

Two North Adams runs in the sixth did not impact the result as Joe Joe Rodriguez (St. John's) struck out three batters to end the game, and secure a 9-3 win.

Sanford goes back on the road tomorrow for a game against the North Shore Navigators.
