Sanford Mainers News Release

NORTH ADAMS, Ma. - No excuse for the Moose.

Despite trailing by three runs heading into the seventh inning, the Mainers continued to work their magic late in the game to defeat North Adams, 6-4.

Alex Knapp's (George Mason) eventual game-winning two-RBI single gave Sanford the lead in the seventh. Jack Mullen (Bowdoin) silenced the SteepleCats bats out of the bullpen.

The game started in favor of North Adams as an RBI sac fly by Cedric Rose (UMass-Lowell) brought in the first run, 1-0.

The SteepleCats went up by a pair in the third as Rose scored on the single from Brady Mutz (Monmouth), 2-0.

They doubled their advantage an inning later in the fourth on the single from Rose that drove in William Binder (Albany) and Hunter Pasqualini (Central Connecticut State), 4-0.

While the Mainers were down, they would not go away without a fight.

In the fifth, they got on the board on the sacrifice fly from David Bermudez (Manhattan) scoring Matthew Polk (Vanderbilt), 4-1.

Matthew Sapienza (Georgetown) would retire after five innings in his first start for Sanford, striking out two batters.

A five-spot in the seventh gave the Mainers the lead and capped off their six unanswered runs.

First, a two-run home run from Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) put the Mainers within one, 4-3. It was Hewett's first blast of the season. A few batters later, with the bases loaded, Knapp would drive in Bermudez and Adam Dapkewicz (Georgetown), 5-4. Finally, a sacrifice fly from Quinn McDaniel (Maine) scored Jake Rainess (Maine).

Mullen entered the game in the sixth and was spectacular in relief. He finished the game with four innings pitched, allowing no runs on just four hits, with five strikeouts.

The win caps off a road trip sweep where the Mainers jumped to 12-14 on the year.

Sanford will return to Goodall Park for a pair of home games on Family Weekend, starting with Saturday's matchup against the Martha's Vineyard Sharks.

Sonny Fauci (St. John's) will be on the mound as these two face off for the first time this season.
