Sanford Mainers News Release

The Sanford Mainers were in their second four game losing streak of the season and facing the Laconia Muskrats didn't make the feeling any better. This season the Mainers have lost the first five meetings against the Muskrats. However, the Mainers were able to come out on top of this game 7-4.

Rohn Pierce got the start for the Mainers and faced off against Mathew Aldrich. Aldrich despite his earned run average, was third in the league in strikeouts with 33 in just 18.1 innings pitched.

Both Pierce and Aldrich had shortened outings as thunderstorms rolled in and forced the tarp onto the field as the game was headed into the bottom of the fourth. Pierce lasted four innings, gave up three hits, allowed one run, walked one, and struck out one. Aldrich went only three innings, giving up three hits, didn't allow any runs, didn't walk anyone, and struck out three.

In the top of the third, Pierce gave up a lead off walk to Chris Harvey. Joe Torres then dropped down a sacrifice bunt to push Harvey to second. With only one out and a runner in scoring position John Ziznewski came to the plate and hit a line drive single to center field, but not before Harvey advanced to third on a wild pitch.

That's all the Muskrats would be able to score before the thunder and lighting touched down at Goodall Park. After an unofficial hour and forty-five minute rain delay, the Mainers were able to get the field back into shape and resume play. Due to the delay new pitchers came into the game for both teams.

Kevin McGowan came in to the game and looked to be lights out in his outing in relief. In 3.1 innings pitched, he gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits, walked one, and struck out seven. Six of his strike outs came before giving up a run.

Mike Calzetta relieved Pierce of his duties in the top of the fifth. He threw two innings, gave up five hits, allowed three runs, walked none, and struck out one.

With the score 4-0 in the Muskrats favor heading to the bottom of the seventh, the Mainers got on the board for the first time and kept it going. Anthony Hajjar lead off the inning by hitting a deep infield single to second baseman Wil Leathers. On the next play, Ino Patron hit a single to left just far enough to advance Hajjar to third. With runners on the corners and no one out, John Gorman walked to load the bases.

Nate LaPointe, who had a chance to bring in the first run of the game for his team, struck out swinging for the first out of the inning. Will Cooper got the inning started with an RBI single to left allowing Hajjar to score. The relief outing for McGowan came to a close as Rob Blanc came in for relief, but the Mainers jumped on him quickly. Jose Torralba lined a single to left allowing Patron to score, but after a fielding error by Donny Duschinsky, Gorman came into score bringing the game within one.

Still with only one out in the inning, Jordan Hagel walked down to first with an intentional walk to load the bases. Jordan Betts hit a chopper to Vince Conde at short who fired a throw out of the reach of Danny Collins, allowing Cooper and Torralba to score the go ahead run.

Blanc then intentionally walked his second batter in the inning, this time to Paul Kronenfeld. Without recording an out, Blanc was relieved by Tom Kriss. However, during Hajjar's second at bat of the inning, he reached on an error by Leathers allowing Hagel to score. The Mainers scored one more run when Patron hit a pitch back to Kriss who fired the ball home for the force out, but Harvey threw a ball too low that eventually got passed Collins at first base, bringing Kronenfeld in to score the Mainers seventh run.

After scoring seven runs in the inning, the Mainers entered into the eighth with the lead. Evan Chamberlain came into relief for Calzetta in the top half of the seventh and finished off the game for the win. He went three innings, gave up three hits, didn't allow anyone to score, walked one, and struck out two.

The Mainers improve to 10-17 on the season and win their first game of the year against the Muskrats. They will be off tomorrow, but will be back in action at home on Thursday to face the Laconia Muskrats once again. Tripp Davis is set to take the hill against the Muskrats. Game time slated for 6:30pm

Notes: Jordan Hagel extends his hitting streak to ten games... Paul Kronenfeld extends his to five... The Mainers have lost nine straight to the Muskrats including last year's play before tonight... The Mainers avoided losing five straight for the second time this season... Seven runs is the most runs scored in one inning in an official game by the Mainers... Scored nine in the top of the second in a currently suspended game against the Keene Swamp Bats...
