July 6, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
The Sanford Mainers topped the Vermont Mountaineers, 7-1 on Wednesday in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
The Mainers scored runs in the third, fourth, and seventh innings to roll past Vermont, and snap the Mountaineers' two-game winning streak.
Ako Thomas (Chicago, Ill./Michigan) got Sanford started offensively when he grounded into a double play in the bottom of the third, scoring Sam Stauble (Harrison, Maine/Southern Maine) from third. The next batter, Zach Jancarski (East Norriton, Pa./Maryland), knocked an RBI single, driving in Michael Young (Chester, N.J./UMass Lowell).
The Mainers bats came alive once again the next inning when John Cresto (Encinitas, Calif./Santa Clara) reached on an error by Vermont's shortstop, allowing Michael Landestoy (Fort Worth, Texas/Texas Christian) to score. Michael Young then drove Cresto in with an RBI single, making it a four run lead.
Vermont starter Sam Bordner (Baltimore, Ohio/Louisville) went three and two thirds innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits. Bordner walked one batter and struck out three. The Mainers started Ben Wessel, who pitched six and one third innings, allowing no runs on three hits, while scattering a walk and five strikeouts.
Sanford struck again in the seventh inning when Zach Jancarski reached on an error and Michael Young came across to score on the play. Young and Ako Thomas came across later that inning thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Nelson Mompierre (Miami, Fla./Miami Dade College Kendall).
The Mountaineers offense was mostly quiet in the contest, but it did come alive briefly in the eighth inning. An RBI single by Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) put Vermont on the board, as Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) came across to score. Mountaineers right fielder Troy Scocca (Syosset, N.Y./Fairfield) also had a hit in the inning but he was stranded at second base.
Bordner suffered the loss for Vermont, moving him to 1-1 on the season. Ben Wessel got the win for the Mainers.
The Mountaineers fall to 7-14. Vermont will be in action again on Thursday evening when they'll travel to Hartford, Vt. to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks for the first time in the month of July. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at the Maxfield Sports Complex. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
