Newport Gulls News Release
NEWPORT, R.I. - After half a season of ups and downs, the Newport Gulls have caught fire in July, picking up their straight win with a 14-4 rout of the Valley Blue Sox at Cardines Field Wednesday night.
The Gulls plated 10 runs in the second inning to go up for good early in the contest, highlighted by a Chris Chatfield three-run double and a Trey Harris two-run homer. In all, 16 Gulls came to the plate in the inning against three Blue Sox pitchers. Chatfield collected four RBI in the frame thanks to a bases-loaded walk later in the inning, while Harris and Shane Matheny each had two hits in the second. Connor Kaiser and Mark Powell each walked twice.
Meanwhile, Hunter Schryver pitched five innings of shutout ball, striking out seven on three hits and two walks to earn the win. Garrett Barker, new Gulls pitcher Blake Battenfield, Adam Wolf, and Blake Cairnes struck out a further 10 batters as they each threw a remaining frame, bringing the Gulls pitching staff's total to 17 strikeouts on the night.
Troy Dixon and Charlie Carpenter got into the action with back-to-back RBI doubles in the fifth, and Jake Brodt added an exclamation point to the Gulls 11-hit night with a two-run home run, his team-leading fourth of the summer, in the eighth.
With the win in front of 2,864 fans at Cardines, the Gulls swept the two-game interdivision series against the Blue Sox, having previously won in Holyoke on June 16, and improved to .500 again on the season at 12-12.
Newport is on the road Thursday to head to Forges Field in Plymouth, Massachusetts for the first time this year to face the Pilgrims at 6:30 p.m. On Friday, the Gulls return home to take on the Danbury Westerners at 6:35 p.m. for Horan Building Company Night. Newport travels to Danbury, Connecticut for a 6:30 start on Saturday before an off day on Sunday.
