Mystic 7, North Adams 3
Tonight's game featured a pitching rematch from the last time the Schooners played the SteepleCats in North Adams, Massachusetts. In both games, Zach Ours started for the Schooners and Ben Olson for the SteepleCats.
For the fourth time in the last five games, the Schooners were able to strike first and score in the first inning. Toby Handley put the second pitch he saw over the fence in left field to give the Schooners an early lead. The solo shot was Handley's first home run of the season.
The Steeplecats got on the board in the third inning after a couple bad pitches that allowed Nick Riotto to advance freely. Nick Riotto advanced to first on a walk then was able to advance around the bases on a wild pitch, passed ball and another wild pitch to score. This tied the ball game at 1-1.
The game was a stalemate until the 5th inning when the Schooners would break it wide open. They would tack on four runs off a Nick Mascelli single, Chase Lunceford walk, Rich Slenker double, Aaron Hill single and Martin Figuroa double. The 5th inning gave the Schooners a big enough lead to hand over to their bullpen to secure a win.
The SteepleCats would answer and score two runs of their own in the top of the 6th. These would be the last runs the SteepleCats would be able to get across. The Schooners would add a run in the 6th and 7th innings for insurance.
The bats for the Schooners really came alive tonight as everybody in the starting lineup recorded a hit. Chase Lunceford had a big day at the plate going (3-3) with 3 singles, an RBI, and a run. He made it on base every at bat as he also walked and was hit by a pitch. Schooner pitching was tremendous as a whole on the night as they only gave up four hits.
With the win, the Schooners improve to 14-10 and sit only a game back of the first-place Ocean State Waves. The Schooners have an off day on Thursday but will be back in action Friday as they take on the Sanford Mainers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30PM at Goodall Park.
