Sanford Mainers News Release
The Sanford Mainers looked to rebound after last night's loss to the Laconia Muskrats. Heading into Newport, Nate Jones got the nod for the Moose, but his outing didn't turn out the way he'd like for the second time in as many appearances. He would get the loss in tonight's 11-2 defeat against the Gulls.
Paul Kronenfeld and Jordan Betts sparked the Mainers offense in the top of the first, hitting back-to-back singles. They later moved into scoring position on a throwing error by Gulls catcher Jeff Melillo.
Anthony Hajjar doubled off the right field wall to bring in the Mainers first run.
Newport turned the game around instantly, scoring two runs the bottom half of the first, one on an RBI single by Steve Anderson and another by Melillo.
Jones settled down in the second inning, but ran into trouble again in the third inning, giving up two more runs to the Gulls offense. Anderson scored on a fielder's choice and was soon followed by Melillo who scored on an error by Mainers second baseman, Jose Torralba.
With a 4-1 lead over the Mainers, the Gulls continued their offensive show in the fifth, scoring four more runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Kasey Coffman.
It didn't stop there for Newport. Leading 8-1 heading into the bottom of the 7th, Yale Rosen liked what Coffman did and hit a three-run home run to right field to put the game way out of reach.
The Mainers would score one more run in the ninth making the score 11-2.
It stayed that way as Sanford drops their second straight game. They will make the trip to New Bedford tomorrow to try and turn things around against the Bay Sox.
Jason Ingrham will make his second start in a Mainers uniform tomorrow night. Game time set for 6:30pm.
