Mainers lose ground with 9-to-4 loss to North Adams

Sanford, ME- Ben Wessel (URI, 0-3 3.72) received the ball for the Sanford Mainers (20-13) in the final match-up of the regular season with the North Adams SteepleCats (16-17). Wessel gave up 6 earned runs in 3 innings of work with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk. The bullpen was solid for the Mainers but the damage was done, John Nicklas (Boston College) pitched 2.2 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 run, 1 walk and issued 4 strikeouts. Jake Marks (Univ. of Maine-Orono) appeared in his 7th game of the season from the rubber his 2nd in almost a month time period working 2.1 innings allowing 1 hit and walking 1 batter with 2 strikeouts.

Mike Rescigno (Maryland) allowed 2 runs, issued 3 walks and completed just 1 strikeout as the pitching staff gave up 11 hits and 8 earned runs, 9 runs in total with 6 walks. A usually steady pitching staff has given up 28 hits in the last two games inside Goodall Park.

Sam Dexter (So. Maine) went 2-for-5 with one RBI, Drake Parker (Vanderbilt) completed a 1-for-2 day with 3 walks, Cory Raley (Texas Tech) finished his night 1-for-3 with an RBI, Caden Bailey (Georgia State) went 1-for-5, Mike Rescigno (Maryland) not only hit safely 2-for-3 on the night but also worked an inning from the mound, Rescigno reached base 4 out of 5 times with 2 walks as well. Kevin Stypulkowski (Univ. of Maine) drove in his first RBI of the season during the course of his 1-for-4 performance, but the Mainers left 14 runners on base and despite three doubles from the bats of Bailey, Rescigno and Pennington the Mainers were unable to counteract the pitching struggles on this night falling 9-to-4.

Ben Wessel gets the loss and drops to 0-for-3 on the season; Zach Prendergast (4-0, 1.26-Seton Hall) gets the victory for North Adams. The SteepleCats were running tonight as they swiped 5 bases and were caught only once. North Adams also left 9 on base and Brad Anderson hit the only double for the 'Cats. Vinny Siena completed his day 3-for5 with 2 RBI, Matt Schmidt drove in a run in his one and only plate appearance, Thomas Delph went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks, and Vladimir Gomez batting in the 9th spot in the order finished 2-for-5 with 3 RBI's.

The Mainers stay at home tomorrow (7/26) against the Valley Blue Sox (12-23) with first pitch at Goodall Park scheduled for 6:30 pm. Christian Lavoie (UMass-Lowell 3-1, 1.00 ERA) gets the ball trying to spur on a bounce back win! The Mainers lose a game due to the 'Neers 8-to-3 victory at Newport and now sit 2.5 games back of Vermont (23-11) for first place in the NECBL Northern Division.
