Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers hosted Opening Day at Goodall Park for their first game in 673 days on Friday night. After having a lead with four runs in the first three innings, a late Muskrats home run and rally doomed the Mainers to a 10-6 loss.
The two teams produced runs early as after only three innings Sanford held a 4-3 lead. Cam Ridley (Eastern Kentucky) scored in the home half of the first on a wild pitch for the first run, then in the third Calvin Hewett (Vanderbilt) shot a two-run single up the middle to tie the game. Later in the same inning, Marty Higgins (St. John's) walked with the bases loaded to give Sanford its first lead of the game.
Garret Keough (Georgetown) started on the bump for the Mainers and pitched the first three innings. He only surrendered one hit and gave up three runs, none of them earned, walked one and struck out two. Winnipesaukee were aided by three Sanford defensive errors in the first two innings which led to the three runs Keough gave up.
Winnipesaukee turned the game in its favor in the seventh inning, scoring five runs in the frame fueled by a three-run home run from Will Vergantino that put the game out of reach for Sanford.
The Mainers were led on offense by Pierce Gallo (Clemson) who went 2-3 with two singles, two walks, and a run scored. Matt Aronson (UMass) and Blake Bennett had solid outings in relief, combining for only one hit and five strikeouts.
The Muskrats got strong pitching performances out of Josh LaJoie (4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 6 BB, 6 K) and Justin Murray (W, 3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K), and were paced on offense by Vergantino with his three-run homer, as well as three runs scored
Sanford hits the road for the first time this season tomorrow for the first of two consecutive games against the defending-league champion Keene Swamp Bats. The return game is Sunday for an early 4:30 PM start.
