SANFORD, Maine - In a flip of the script, the Sanford Mainers scored first, but were on the wrong side of a comeback victory as they fell by a score of 8-3 to Vermont on Sunday night.

For the first time this season, the Mainers provided an early lead for their starting pitcher as Logan Poteet (Vanderbilt) drove in Devan Bade (Binghamton), who extended his on base streak to seven games when he reached on a fielder's choice, with an RBI single.

While Poteet gave his batterymate, Seamus Barrett (Loyola Marymount), the early lead, Barrett gave it up just two hitters into his appearance.

Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh) worked himself into a full count and deposited the payoff pitch over the right field wall to tie the score at one apiece.

Two-innings later, the Mountaineers struck for another as two infield errors, one by Jeremiah Jenkins (Maine) and one by Bade, allowed Nate Stocum (Western Carolina) to not only get on base, but come around to put his team ahead 2-1.

Sanford put itself into a prime position to tie the game in the next half-inning as Cody Bowker (Georgetown) and Nick Roselli (Binghamton) each worked walks. Those two ended up on second and third, but Nolan Sparks (Rochester) struck out Eddie Eisert (Virginia Tech) to end the threat.

Sparks' night ended in the sixth after reaching the double-digit strikeout plateau when he struck out Devin Russell (Maryland) to record the second out of the inning. Sparks allowed plenty of baserunners in his 5.2 innings of work as the Mainers worked five walks and two hits, but he allowed just the one run to score.

With his counterpart removed from the ballgame, Barrett returned to the bump in the bottom of the sixth inning. After getting his revenge via a strikeout of Cantwell, Barrett allowed Nate Goranson (William & Mary) to reach on a walk and then Santino Rosso (Hofstra) snuck one over the wall to double Vermont's run total.

The 6'7 right-handed pitcher saw another two batters before Jacob Jette (UMass Lowell) replaced him after 5.2 innings pitched, four runs, three earned runs, four strikeouts and a pair of both hits and walks.

Jette allowed the first hitter he faced to reach on a single, but Poteet threw out Grant Voytovich (Bucknell), who was Barrett's last responsibility, on a stolen base attempt to end any further threat in the sixth.

An inning later, the Mountaineers got to Jette, as a double by Goranson brough Jack Renwick (Wofford) and Brandon Butterworth (Western Carolina) home to score.

Trailing 6-1, the green and yellow put the pressure onto William Hoffacker (Le Moyne) in the eighth.

Eisert reached on a walk to start the seventh before stealing second base, which was the first successful stolen base for Sanford this season, to put himself in scoring position. A couple of batters later, Eisert, who had moved to third on a flyout by Poteet, scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to four.

The Mainers were looking to keep their early season comeback heroics alive, but Hoffacker got Jenkins to ground into an inning-ending double play to keep the Moose at bay.

Vermont scored two more in the bottom of the eighth and Sanford got one back in the ninth, as the Mountaineers won the first rematch from last year's playoff series.

Sanford and Vermont go at it again tomorrow as the two teams travel to Goodall Park for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
