MONTPELIER, Vt. - Backs against the wall.

After winning a wild card matchup with Newport, the Mainers fell in game one against Vermont in the NECBL Semifinals, 8-3, and are on the brink of elimination. A six-run second inning gave the Mountaineers the lead, and they never looked back.

The Moose had early chances but couldn't solve Aaron Dona (St. Thomas Aquinas) before Vermont broke the game wide open in the second.

Matt Venuto (Fairfield) launched a leadoff home run in his first game since late June. A sacrifice fly from Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) scored Tom Ruscitti (Fairleigh Dickinson), then a wild pitch brought in Cam Gill (Wofford).

Later, a single from Santino Rosso (Hofstra) drove in Anthony DeFabbia (Stetson). Finally, some heads-up baserunning scored Nic Notarangelo (Endicott), and a double from Mark Trotta (William & Mary) scored Rosso, 6-0.

Sanford bounced back in the top of third as Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt) doubled and then a pair of throwing errors gave him an inside-the-park home run. Later in the inning, Jake Rainess (Maine) smoked a ball 102 MPH over the left-centerfield fence, landing at 413 feet.

The Mountaineers responded with a pair of runs for themselves in the bottom half, as DeFabbia singled to drive in Ruscitti and Tyler Wells (New Haven), 8-2.

Following four scoreless frames, the Mainers dialed up the long ball once again as David Bermudez connected on his first of the season, 8-3.

The green and yellow got nothing the rest of the way, and despite a strong relief appearance from Jack Mullen (Bowdoin) where he struck out four in 5.1 innings, it was too big of a deficit.

Sanford returns home to Goodall Park for a must-win game two at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Ryan Douglas (UNC-Asheville) will start on the mound.
