SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers defeated the Vermont Mountaineers, 8-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Goodall Park on Friday night.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 5-5 on the summer, while Sanford improves to 6-5.

With the score tied at two entering the bottom of the seventh, Mainers' junior first baseman Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J. / Monmouth) cranked a solo homerun to right field to provide Sanford with a 3-2 edge.

The Mainers would go on to score five more runs in the eighth inning en route to an 8-2 win.

Junior pinch hitter Trae Sweeting (Atlanta, Ga. / Georgia State) led off the eighth with a walk. The next batter, junior Dan Hetzel (Holbrook, N.Y. / Cochise), singled to right. Sweeting moved from first to third on the play. In an attempt to nab Sweeting at third, Vermont junior right fielder Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) threw a dart, but his throw was off line and squirted toward the Sanford bullpen down the left field line, allowing Sweeting to score and Hetzel to advance to third. Two batters later, with a runner on third, junior Brandon Bingel (Peabody, Mass. / Bryant) was intentionally walked. Two hitters after that, senior shortstop Dave Schanz (Edison, N.J. / Binghamton) ripped a two-RBI single to score Hetzel and Bingel and make it a 6-2 game. After junior Nate Stepna (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cochise) reached on an infield single, Hughes came through with an RBI base hit to score Schanz. Stepna also scored on an error on the play to put the Mainers up 8-2.

Sanford scored the first two runs of the game in the third, when junior Dalton Thomas (Grenada, Miss. / Arkansas Little Rock) smacked a two-run homerun to left field.

Vermont answered with two runs in the fifth inning to knot the score at two. Sophomore Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) drew a one out walk. Sophomore shortstop Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) followed with a single to setup first and second with one out. Senior Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) then hit an RBI double to score Jackson to make it a 2-1 game. Senior Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) reached on a fielder's choice to score Hairston from third and tie the game at two.
