New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

New Bedford - The New Bedford Bay Sox beat the first place Mystic Schooners last night at Paul Walsh Field in a final score of 3 - 1.

New Bedford starting pitcher, Justin Thomas (Quinnipiac) pitched a gem for the Bay Sox in his third appearance of the season. He shut out the hot Mystic Schooners while striking out five batters and allowing just one hit in six complete innings on the mound.

The New Bedford offense were able to string together five hits on their night. Fairhaven native Ryan Baldwin (Barry) contributed two singles himself. He drove in T.J. Dixon (Samford) in the second inning to give the Bay Sox the early lead.

Jake Friar (Sacred Heart) would widen the one-run lead for New Bedford in the seventh inning with a perfectly executed sacrifice squeeze.

Ted Shaw (Sacred Heart) added an eighth inning triple and came home to score an insurance run, being driven in with a sacrifice fly by Anthony Critelli (Holy Cross).

The starting pitcher for the Schooners also recorded a quality start for Mystic. Sam Nepiarsky (UConn) threw 6 1/3rd innings while striking out six New Bedford bats and giving up just two hits. However the two earned runs he gave up would be all that New Bedford needed to come out with the win.

Phil Reese (Holy Cross) came into the game in the seventh inning and tossed 2 1/3rd innings. His final line included just one run on three strikeouts and one walk. He gave up two hits for his night.

Today's First Citizens Player of the Game is awarded to the left-handed pitcher out of Quinnipiac, Justin Thomas. He picked up his first win of the season and was a big reason why the nine game winning streak of the Mystic Schooners came to an end, surrendering just a single hit in his six complete innings of work.

The Bay Sox will travel to Danbury today to take on the Westerners for the first time this season. They will be playing a day-night double header. Michael Young (Stonehill) is expected to go in game one for New Bedford.
