Sanford Mainers News Release
MONTPELLIER, Vermont - For the third time this season, the Sanford Mainers find themselves on a three-game losing streak as they could not get much going on the mound nor at the plate in a 9-2 loss to Vermont on Sunday night.
In their third meeting of the week, the Mountaineers, who had taken the previous two matchups by outscoring the Mainers 22-8, broke through on the scoreboard early. It was not as early as a week ago when their second hitter, Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh), deposited a home run over the right field wall, but rather this time around the offense was started by their three-hole hitter, George Rosales (Fairleigh Dickinson).
Rosales came around to score as Nathan Waugh (Cornell) doubled off Nick Thompson (Colby) to keep the two-out rally alive. TJ Williams (Notre Dame) hit the third of a trio of doubles to put the Mountaineers ahead. Despite loading the bases, the Mountaineers could not get anything else going in the inning as the lefty on the hill escaped without number three.
It seemed, at least early, as if the Mainers would keep the game close. Nick Roselli (Binghamton) broke a four-game hitless streak as he recorded Sanford's first hit by way of a second-inning single. One batter later, it was Devin Russell (Maryland) breaking a three-game hitless streak of his own as he registered his first hit of the summer with an RBI triple that scored Roselli from first.
Evan Fox (Stony Brook) worked a walk against Thompson after Williams flew out to right to begin the top of the third. That walk proved to be the end of Thompson's night, but not of his final stat line as Michael Dragon (Merrimack) replaced him on the mound.
Dragon hit the first batter he faced, Grant Voytovich (Bucknell), before both Voytovich and Fox took off on a double steal. Both slid in safely as the throw from Russell, who attempted to get the trailing runner, snuck into center field which allowed Thompson's responsibility, Fox, to score.
Roselli got the best of Mountaineers' starter Aidan Tucker (Tufts) for a second time as he hit a 345-foot solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-2.
That was the final blemish on the line of Tucker, who finished his night an inning later after he allowed just four hits and two runs over five frames of work. Not only was it the final blemish on Tucker, but on the Mountaineers' pitchers as a group since Brendan McFall (Northeastern) and Aidan D'Allesio (Princeton) combined for four shutout innings while allowing just four baserunners the rest of the way.
The Mainers pitchers could not find that same success that the trio of Vermont throwers did. Dragon issued a free pass via a hit-by-pitch of Williams to end his night in the fifth. With Nic Lops electing for Chris Gallagher (Wright State) out of the bullpen, Mitch Holmes went to his bench for pinch hitter Marshall Toole (Wofford).
Toole got the best of Gallagher with a double to score Williams and add upon the Mountaineers lead. Gallagher finished the inning without further trouble and pitched a scoreless sixth to keep the game at 4-2 heading into the seventh.
Gallagher allowed a leadoff double to Waught in the home portion of the seventh that led him to be replaced by Michael Simes (UMass Lowell). Waugh came around to score on a combination of a passed ball and wild pitch to extend the Vermont lead to 5-2.
Simes allowed his first batter in Williams to reach on a walk during the at-bat in which Waugh came around to score. Tyler Cox (Dartmouth) drove Williams in with a single before Simes escaped the rest of the inning without allowing a run.
Connor Caverly (Springfield) allowed three runners to score in Cantwell, Rosales and Waugh with Toole, Cox and Jack Renwick (Wofford) picking up the runs batted in to increase the lead to an insurmountable 9-2.
The Mainers return to Goodall Park for the first time in a week when they host Bristol tomorrow evening.
