JACKSONVILLE, Fla. â Pat Magness' two-run home run in the ninth inning gave the Carolina Mudcats a 3-1 victory over the Suns in front of 2,858 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
With two outs, Magness hit his first home run of the season off Suns reliever Lino Urdaneta, which broke a 1-1 tie. The Suns (48-51 overall, 17-13 second half) failed to score in the bottom of the ninth off Mudcats closer Mike Flannery. Flannery earned his 14th save, allowing only a leadoff single to Jason Repko, who was left stranded at second. Urdaneta (0-6) earned the loss.
Rodney Van Buizen, starting for the first time with the Suns, singled home Nick Alvarez in the second inning to give Jacksonville a 1-0 lead off Mudcats starter Todd Moser. Moser was activated from the disabled list before the game and was limited to 50 pitches because of a blister on his left middle finger. Moser went four innings and did not factor in the decision. Reliever Jose Cueto (4-2) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to pick up the victory.
The Mudcats (57-40, 15-14) retaliated with a run in the top of third inning off Suns starter Edwin Jackson. Billy Hall singled home Brandon Harper with nobody out to tie the score, 1-1. Jackson struck out the next two hitters and then was bailed out by right fielder Reggie Abercrombie. Josh Wilson laced a line drive toward the foul line which Abercrombie dove and caught, ending the inning.
Jackson pitched six innings, allowing three hits and one run but earned a no-decision.
Right-hander Will McCrotty (1-2, 4.06 ERA) is scheduled to face Greenville Braves righty Daniel Curtis (1-1, 4.38) at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Greenville Municipal Stadium.
