Orlando Rays News Release
Greenville, S.C.â Three Orlando pitchers combined to toss a two-hit shutout as the Rays won their third straight game, edging the Braves 1-0 at Greenville Municipal Stadium Monday.
Orlando's Chad Gaudin made his second start for the Rays and the first since his perfect game on Tuesday, July 15. The 20-year-old held Greenville scoreless through four innings but was in a bit of a jam in the fifth when Mother Nature made a guest appearance. With runners on first and second and no outs, the skies opened and play was halted for nearly 1-½ hours. When play resumed Travis Minix (3-2) had taken the mound for the Rays. Minix would work out of the jam and go on to toss three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out three in picking up his third win. John Benedetti (SV, 3) worked two perfect innings to close out the game for the Rays.
Orlando's offense wasn't much better than Greenville's, managing only five hits on the night. The Rays did manage to push across the game's only run in the fourth, starting with Frank Moore's double off the left-field wall. Juan Salas singled to center, advancing Moore to third, and Jonny Gomes hit a RBI sacrifice fly to center, giving the Rays a 1-0 lead.
Jesus Feliciano went 2-4 for the Rays, who improved to 11-19 on the second half and 43-56 overall, while Greenville slipped to 9-20, 45-52. The win gave Orlando their first series win of the second half of the season and first since taking three of four at Mobile June 13-16.
Orlando returns home to kick off an eight-game homestand, starting tomorrow with the Carolina Mudcats. Orlando will send right-hander Jim Magrane (8-5, 3.74).
