July 21, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The first place Mobile BayBears entered the final game of their 10-day homestand with a chance to extend their lead on the rest of the pack in the West Division of the Southern League. However, their defense let them down in the top of the seventh inning. Allowing two unearned runs to score and giving Chattanooga the lead to stay, 3-2.
The BayBears led 2-1 as the seventh inning began, with starter Duncan McAdoo being helped by his defense. He had allowed six hits through six innings but the BayBears infield had turned two double plays. McAdoo allowed a leadoff single to Guye Senjem and was relieved by J.J. Trujillo.
The Lookouts Brad Correll dropped a bunt down the first base line and Humberto Quintero threw wildly to Bobby Scales covering first for the first error of the frame. Alejandro Diaz followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Senjem from third, tying the game 2-2. After a passed ball by Quintero, Trujillo hit Brian Peterson with a pitch, putting runners at the corners with one out. Andrew Beattie then drove in the eventual winning run with a pinch hit, sacrifice fly to center.
Leadoff batter, Freddy Guzman scored both of the BayBears runs. In the fourth he crossed the plate on a Rico Washington infield groundout. In the sixth inning Todd Donovan doubled in Guzman with a shot to the gap in left-center field.
Trujillo (1-1) took the tough loss though the run he allowed was unearned. The loss moves the BayBears into a three-way tie for first in their division with Huntsville and Birmingham.
The BayBears now travel to Jackson, Tennessee to begin a four-game series with the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx. Chris Rojas (5-6; 4.72) will make his return to the starting rotation with the start on Tuesday night.
