Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - When Tiernan Shoudy broke a 1-1 tie with 5:31 left in regulation to put the Youngstown Phantoms ahead, you might have thought the game was over. You would have been wrong. The Madison Capitols scored twice in the following three minutes to stun the Phantoms and claim Game 1 of this best-of-three playoff series 3-2. Youngstown faces elimination tomorrow night.
Shoudy's marker that gave the Phantoms their first lead came from two of the hallmarks of Shoudy's game: winning faceoffs and getting to the net. After Shoudy won an offensive zone draw back to Bayard Hall, the defenseman fired a one-timer from center point towards the cage. Simon Latkoczy (18 saves) made the initial stop, but was out of position and couldn't stop Shoudy from chipping home the rebound to give Youngstown their first lead of the game.
Youngstown had the lead for all of 47 seconds. Jack Horbach beat Jacob Fowler (24 saves) with a beautiful one-timer from the right circle to knot the game back up. Just as it seemed like the Phantoms had captured the momentum, Madison snatched it right back. The Capitols continued to ride that wave for another two minutes, forcing a turnover and putting it into the Phantoms net. Horbach picked off a clearing attempt by Youngstown and fed the puck to Nick DeSantis. DeSantis fed it down low to an uncovered Jack Musa. Musa deked around Fowler and tucked home the game winner with 2:54 remaining in regulation.
Madison opened the scoring late in the first period off another Youngstown turnover. After a Madison turnover, Fowler bobbled the puck at the side of the cage. Tyler Haskins played Jonny-on-the-spot for Madison and was there to slam the puck into the unprotected net, giving the Capitols a 1-0 lead at 15:06. Youngstown answered back early in the second when William Whitelaw put home a rebound just 1:55 into the middle frame, knotting things up at 1-1.
"You're not going to go through a series or any stretch of time in playoffs when you're not going to face some sort of adversity," said Phantoms Head Coach Brad Patterson. "Obviously we're facing ours right now. We need to show up and have a good effort (Tuesday). You can say we've been in this situation quite a bit this year where our backs are against the wall. We need a response."
The Phantoms have now lost five straight playoff games, dating back to the 2018 Clark Cup Final, all at home. Youngstown will try to stave off elimination Tuesday night at the Covelli Centre.
