April 26, 2022 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Lincoln Stars won the opening game of a best-of-three USHL playoff series Monday night, topping the Waterloo Black Hawks 5-2 at the Ice Box.
Lincoln put 21 shots on net in the first period and scored on three of them. The opening goal came at 5:24 when Killian Kiecker-Olson put back the rebound of an initial shot by Joaquim LeMay.
Then just after a power play ended, Lucas Wahlin made it 2-0 at 9:11, firing a shot under the crossbar. Lincoln's third score came on a deflection off a Black Hawk at 18:40; Henry Nelson's shot from the left point knuckled and short-hopped past Emmett Croteau.
Early in the second, the teams exchanged goals separated by 11 seconds. Garrett Schifsky had the first on a setup by Gavin O'Connell at 1:04. However, the Stars controlled the ensuing faceoff, and Mason Marcellus sped to the netmouth to shovel in backhander.
Waterloo produced the only other goal of the period while the teams were skating four-on-four at 15:05. O'Connell created a takeaway in the left corner and turned above the circle, pulling the trigger on a shot. Schifsky tipped it down and past Kaiden Mbereko to bring the Hawks back within two.
The Hawks denied a five-on-three Lincoln Stars power play which lasted for 1:41 during the mid-stages of the third period. However, Waterloo was turned away on two advantages in the final 20 minutes, finishing the night 0-for-5 in that category.
Wahlin added his second goal into an empty net with less than a second remaining after the Black Hawks played the last three minutes with an extra attacker.
Game Two between the Hawks and Stars is in Lincoln on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m.
