Madden Gets Win, Promoted in 15-8 Win

LANSING, MI - In what may have been the final performance of his West Michigan Whitecaps career, pitcher Ty Madden earned the victory as part of a 15-8 win over the Lansing Lugnuts in front of 3,502 fans at Jackson Field Tuesday night.

Madden, the Detroit Tigers No. 4 Prospect, allowed five runs on a career-high ten base hits but managed to pitch five innings without walking a batter and striking out five. After the game, the Detroit Tigers announced that Madden is headed to the Double-A Erie Seawolves as part of multiple promotions throughout the system.

As for the ballgame, West Michigan stormed out to a 10-1 lead after just two innings. Two-run home runs by Bryant Packard and Jake Holton preceded a grand slam from Ben Malgeri in the second inning. Lansing scored seven unanswered runs, highlighted by a two-run, inside-the-park-home-run from Denzel Clarke in the seventh to trim the 'Caps deficit to 10-8. In the eighth. A two-run single by Josh Crouch provided much-needed insurance before Lansing brought in first baseman Patrick McColl to pitch. The result came in a three-run homer from Corey Joyce to seal the victory by a score of 15-8 - giving the 'Caps a win in the first of six in Lansing.

Madden (6-4) leaves West Michigan with his sixth win, while Lansing starter Grant Holman (1-3) suffers his third loss. The Whitecaps currently hold a four-game lead over the Great Lakes Loons and Lake County Captains for first place in the Midwest League East second-half standings. The Whitecaps improve to 53-44 and 22-9 in the second half. The Lugnuts fall to 47-60 and 12-19. Bryant Packard led West Michigan with three hits - including a home run - in the victory. The Tigers also announced after the game that infielder Izaac Pacheco, a Top-10 prospect with the organization, is headed to West Michigan to play for the Whitecaps. Pacheco has hit .281 with 11 doubles since the beginning of June.
