Mack named Defensive Player of the Week
March 8, 2005 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Mar. 8, 2005) â For his performance in Orlando, the Arena Football League announced today that Tremain Mack has been named the ADT Defensive Player of the Week. This is the first time Mack has won an AFL weekly honor and he is the first SaberCats rookie to ever win that award.
"I'm shocked," Mack admitted. "I give credit to my teammates especially [two-time AFL Defensive Player of the Year] Clevan Thomas and the secondary. I'd also like to give credit to our receivers. If you have to cover them everyday, you're going to get good. When we go out and face other teams, it seems easier than it is during practice."
Filling in for injured DS Omarr Smith, Mack has made an immediate impact. In his first AFL startâand only his second gameâMack earned ADT Defensive Player of the Game honors after collecting a team-high six tackles and adding three pass breakups helping hold Orlando to 212 yards of offense in San Jose's 57-38 victory over the Predators.
The former standout at the University of Miami (Fla.), Mack spent four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, earning Pro Bowl honors in 1999. After his tenure in the NFL, Mack spent parts of 2004 with the Louisville Fire of af2. His transition from the outdoor game to the indoor game hasn't always been easy.
"I knew it was going to be a long road," he said. "But despite the letdowns, I just kept fighting. To go through what I've been through and to come back and have the opportunity to play, it feels unbelievable. I've set the bar pretty high for myself, but I'm going to try to keep myself playing at that level."
The SaberCats return to the HP Pavilion to play the Philadelphia Soul on Friday, Mar. 11, at 7:30 p.m. Catch Mack and the rest of the SaberCats defense as they try to shutdown All-Arena QB Tony Graziani.
Individual game tickets for the 2005 season can be purchased through any Northern California TicketMaster outlet, online at http://www.ticketmaster.com and at the HP Pavilion box office.
