THE COACHES
Mike Neu: The first coach of the New Orleans VooDoo, Mike Neu is a six-year Arena Football coaching veteran.
Since being named coach of the VooDoo on June 17, 2003, Neu worked has worked tirelessly to make New Orleans a winning team. In his first season at the helm, he successfully molded a 24-man roster comprised of a mix of AFL veterans and rookies, allowing the VooDoo to get off to a 7-1 start, one of the fastest starts for a first-year AFL entry. Neu led the VooDoo to an 11-5 record, making them the only team in league history to win 11 games in their first season.
The VooDoo's Southern Division title marked only the fourth time in AFL history that an expansion franchise has won their division in their first year of play. Following the season, Neu was named the AFL Coach of the Year.
For his professional career, Neu has posted a 22-14 regular season record and has reached the playoffs every season as both a coach and a player in the Arena Football League.
Neu came to New Orleans after serving as head coach of the Carolina Cobras. In 2002, Neu guided the Cobras to a 5-2 record on the road and their second-straight playoff berth. Carolina posted the first playoff victory in club history in 2002 as the club featured the AFL's fourth-ranked defense. As offensive coordinator with the Cobras in 2001, before being promoted to head coach prior to the team's first round playoff game, the Cobras averaged over 56 points a game (fifth in the league) and finished 7-7 (improving from a 3-13 record the year before).
Prior to coming to Carolina, Neu served as head coach and director of football operations for the Augusta Stallions of af2 in 2000. In his only season, Neu led Augusta to a 14-4 record, the American Conference title and was named the league's Coach of the Year. Augusta finished in the top four in every major offensive and defensive category. Neu started his AFL coaching career with Nashville in 1998, when he served as quarterbacks coach for the Kats and handled all play-calling responsibilities for the offense. The next year he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Kats achieved their third consecutive playoff berth. The team also set franchise highs in six offensive categories, including scoring and total offense. Current New Orleans QB Andy Kelly, one of top quarterbacks in Arena Football League history, enjoyed a career-high passer rating of 116.4 under Neu's tutelage in 1999. Neu began his coaching career in 1994 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Ball State.
Neu's professional playing career started with a stint with the CFL's Calgary Stampeders in 1995 before joining the Orlando Predators in 1996 and moving on to the Nashville Kats in 1997. The 1997 Nashville squad which Neu played on won an expansion record 10 games, a record which was broken by this VooDoo in 2004.
Neu played four seasons at Ball State, where he was named the MAC Most Valuable Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 1993. A four-year starter, Neu guided Ball State to the conference championship his final year and holds school career passing records in passing yardage, passing attempts, completions and touchdown passes. He was recently voted to the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen and a son, Carson.
Jay Gruden: Jay Gruden is in his second stint and begins his 6th year overall as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations for the Orlando Predators. After a Hall of Fame career as a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Storm, Gruden began his coaching career in 1997 by serving as offensive assistant for the Nashville Kats. One season later, the Predators made him the youngest head coach in the AFL.
Gruden would go on to lead the Predators to three consecutive appearances in the ArenaBowl and a pair of championships. After guiding the Predators to a fourth consecutive trip to the playoffs in 2001, Gruden announced his intentions to resign in order to return to the playing field after a five-year layoff.
In two seasons as Predators quarterback, Gruden directed Orlando to back-to-back appearances in the semifinals, falling one game short of his goal of returning to the ArenaBowl as a player. In 2003, he recorded a 10-0 mark with 49 TD passes and two interceptions as a starting quarterback.
Off-season surgery, combined with the tragic loss of former Head Coach Fran Papasedero in a June 19, 2003 traffic accident, resulted in Gruden returning to the sideline.
Gruden will take a 57-32 (.641) all-time coaching record into the New Orleans game. He is 49-29 in regular season games (.628) and a solid 8-3 as a head coach in playoff games (.727).
In addition to his duties with the Predators, Gruden has spent the last years as an offensive assistant with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL. In that capacity, Gruden earned a championship ring with the Bucs in 2002, his seventh championship ring in professional football.
A four-year letterwinner at the University of Louisville (1985- 88), Gruden finished his career with 7,024 passing yards, completing 572 of 1049 passes for 44 touchdowns. All four stats still rank as the third best career totals in Cardinals history.
As a senior, he led Louisville to an 8-3 record, the first winning season in 10 years for the Cardinals. Following graduation with a degree in communications, Gruden spent two seasons as a graduate assistant on Coach Howard Schnellenberger's staff.
Gruden hails from a football family. His father Jim is a longtime NFL assistant coach and scout with Tampa Bay and San Francisco and currently works as a consultant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; while his brother Jon is the Head Coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Jay resides in Orlando with his wife Sherry and three sons, JJ (14), Joey (10) and Jack (8).

TOPS AT HOME
A contributing factor for the VooDoo's early success is their cumulative 10-1 regular season record at the New Orleans Arena. After finishing tied for first in the league with a 7-1 home record in 2004, The VooDoo have kept pace this current season, winning their first three home contests.

TOP OF THE POLLS
The New Orleans VooDoo's early success in 2005 has impressed media members enough to move them up to the number one spot in both of their weekly power rating polls. In the Arena Football League's "Power Poll", released on Tuesday on arenafootball.com, the league's official website, the VooDoo held the top spot for the second consecutive week. The VooDoo moved into the top spot for the Arena Football Writers Association weekly poll two weeks ago and has since held onto the top spot. The AFLWA is a national organization made up of media members who cover the AFL. Both weekly polls ranked the top eight teams in the Arena Football League. At the beginning of the season, New Orleans failed to hold a spot in either weekly poll.
RECEIVING OPTION
WR/LB Thabiti Davis was signed from Detroit to fill the void of a tall receiver in the VooDoo offense and improve the team's red zone production. After enjoying career-highs in 2004 and finishing among league leaders with 127 receptions for 1557 yards and 26 touchdowns, Davis has helped the the VooDoo offense, recording 51 receptions for 445 yards and 10 touchdowns. Currently, Davis is tied for 14th in the AFL in scoring among nonkickers (60), ranked second in receptions, 20th in receiving yardage, tied for sixth in first downs (29) and third in third down receptions (8). Davis has also been a steady defender at the "Jill" linebacker position, recording 10 solo tackles.
IMPACT PLAYER
New Orleans VooDoo OS Aaron Bailey has been an important part of the VooDoo offense and one of the AFL's leading receivers since signing with the team prior to their inaugural season. In 2004, Bailey recorded 91 receptions for 1364 yards with 32 touchdowns and finished among league leaders in all major receiving categories, while setting career-highs. This season, Bailey is once again ranked among Arena Football League leaders with 50 receptions for 682 yards and 13 touchdown catches, while returning 12 kickoffs for 166 yards. Bailey is currently tied for fifth in the Arena Football League in scoring among nonkickers (84) and touchdown receptions, ranked third in receptions, second in receiving yardage and total yards from scrimmage (683), sixth in all-purpose yards (849), second in first downs (41) and tied for third in third down receptions (8).
ANDY KELLY
QB Andy Kelly, one of the AFL's premier quarterbacks and all-time passing leaders, was signed by the VooDoo in the team's objective to improve their passing offense. He currently holds the AFL career passing records for completions (3039), attempts (4932) and passing yards (33, 860) and is second all-time in touchdown passes (658). Kelly helped engineer squads in Nashville, Dallas and Detroit to playoff berths in seven consecutive seasons from 1997-2003 and helped lead the Kats to consecutive ArenaBowl berths from 2000-01. Kelly has started 125 consecutive games, the alltime record for consecutive starts by a QB. Kelly currently trails New York's Aaron Garcia (671) for the league's all-time lead in touchdown passes by three scores, as he is currently the fourth rated quarterback in the Arena Football League in 2005 (117.5) and at or near the top of the league leaders in most categories, completing 176-of-261 passes for 1827 yards with 38 TD passes and four interceptions. The 12- year AFL veteran is currently leading the league in attempts, completions, passing yardage, TD passes and is second in completion percentage (67.4).
B.J. COHEN
OL/DL B.J. Cohen's leadership and performance has played a key role both on the field and in the locker room for the VooDoo. Starting 16 games last season, Cohen recorded 26 tackles, four sacks and finished third in the AFL with a career-high four forced fumbles. In 2005, Cohen is currently among the AFL's defensive leaders with 10.5 tackles, five sacks, one interception and a career-high five passes defensed. He is ranked second in the league in sacks.

Coach Neu Says
Excerpts from VooDoo coach Mike Neu's comments about the team's win over the Dallas Desperados and and the matchup with Sunday's upcoming opponent, the Orlando Predators at his weekly press conference.
(on how he describes Saturday's win over Dallas) "Those are becoming every week games for us now. It was a seesaw battle back and forth, some high points, some low points. I think the best way in the end to sum it up is we made a couple plays when we had to, we scored a touchdown when we had to. Our defense again, give them credit. They came up in the second half with some key interceptions."
(on what he thought of the team's performance after further reviewing the game film) "In watching the film yesterday, I was quick to jump out and find a few mistakes, but I wanted to make sure I slept on it overnight, watched it again this morning to make sure I felt that same way. I think from an offensive standpoint, the two that bothered me the most, we missed on that first drive on the game, we missed a touchdown in the corner of the end zone. Aaron (Bailey) got one hand on it and then we missed another one right before the safety. We missed a long touchdown pass to Aaron Bailey. They were playing zone coverage and we had a corner route and a post route which is a zone beater and we missed a touchdown to Aaron on that one. I told them on my opinion as a coach, we have got to get better and get more production out of practice. I understand. Jacques (Rumph), Aaron has had his knee drained. He's had the flu. Jacques missed a better part of practice because of his back. Thabiti's (Davis) had some back problems, but our just missing on a couple of throws and just missing timingwise, to me, comes down to practice. We got to get better and we got to get more productive in practice and I appreciate guys playing through pain. I appreciate guys playing through injury, but at the same time, you got to be honest with me, but if you're hurt, don't hurt your team. We got good players that are on the practice squad. We've got good players that are inactive every week. It may come to a point where we have to get one of those guys in there, because if they're hurting, whether it's their back, their knee, an ankle, the last thing we want to do is have that affect the outcome of a game and their production. We're just missing on a couple of things and that's in my opinion, why as a coach."
(on missing Monty Montgomery in the game with a stinger) "He's okay. I know he was chomping at the bit late in the week and wanted to do, but unfortunately he got a neck stinger in the game against Tampa Bay and it was a precautionary move and the doctor thought it was best to keep Monty out this week and didn't want to take any chances. That's the right thing to do, although it was killing Monty, because this was a chance for him to go back and play in front of his family and friends. He had a lot of people who were going to come to this football game. It hurt to make that move and ultimately not have Monty on the trip with us. That hurt. Ultimately it was the best thing to do for our football team."
(on if Montgomery is fully recovered) "It was nothing serious. It was just a precautionary move and he'll be fine this week."
(on when Montgomery got hurt) "He was covering Clif Dell on a deep post route late in the game and he hit the wall and once he hit the wall, he had a stinger. We didn't want to take a chance."
(on the team's history with Orlando) "You hit a sore spot, because the Orlando Predators are the team that has beaten us at home. We are 0-2 in my career as the New Orleans VooDoo head coach against Orlando. My players know that. That was the talk on the return trip against Dallas. We haven't beaten them yet, but our home field advantage is just unbelievable. Our fans do such an incredible job of creating an atmosphere for us at home that it gives us an unbelievable advantage. The word's starting to get out to the rest of the league that New Orleans is a special place, nice environment, it's hostile. People are loud. They're going to make it tough on you and you got to be ready to play."
(on if other coaches and players talk about the homefield advantage of the New Orleans Arena) "I talk to other players and coaches after games in the tunnel, leaving the arena at home when we play with them saying, "You guys got something nice going on there." The fans are unbelievable. Coaches that I've talked to in pregame warmup, that have looked at our film and have seen the fans on their feet at the end of the game and making it loud and making it tough. People start to talk about it. Players do too. It's always fun to talk to players and have them say, you guys got something nice going on there."
(on why this team has struggled against Orlando) "To be honest with you last year, we just didn't play two very good football games overall and last year we lost a battle up front against Orlando in both those contests and I think in the Arena League it always comes down every week as to who is going to get the most pressure on the quarterback and who's going to be able to protect their quarterback, so again, it's no different this week. That's what's going to be the battle, because Orlando has a lot of the same linemen that they had last year when we played those guys twice."
(on the performance of the linemen) "Those guys have been doing a good job. Mike Landry has done a great job playing the nose guard position for us. Brook Miller although he missed this past week and John Hilliard. I think our rookies have done a great job of making a big contribution and I think our veterans are to be credited for that. They've helped to bring those guys along and coach (Junior) Ili, certainly knows minuteswise keeps on top of those guys. We don't want to leave them in too long where they're going to get exploited and he does a good job of managing those guys up front."
