Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Former Waterloo Black Hawks defenseman Jacob MacDonald has been traded to the San Jose Sharks as part of a four-player deal with the Colorado Avalanche.

MacDonald was a Black Hawk for two seasons (2009/10 and 2010/11), then played at Cornell. He made his NHL debut with the Florida Panthers in 2018 and had become part of the Avalanche organization after signing a free agent contract in the 2019 offseason.

Forward Martin Kaut also moved from Colorado to San Jose. The Avalanche received forward Matt Nieto and defenseman Ryan Merkley. The Sharks' next game is tomorrow against the Carolina Hurricanes.

When MacDonald was added to the Waterloo roster in December of 2009, he was among the youngest members of the Black Hawks. The then-16-year-old went on to skate in 29 games as a USHL rookie, tallying four goals and six assists. His +7 plus/minus differential ranked sixth on the team. The next season, MacDonald was Waterloo's second-leading scorer with 30 points (eight goals, 22 assists), while playing in 58 of 60 games. He finished one point behind team leader Tyler Zepeda. Three of MacDonald's four goals were game-winners, tying him for the team lead.

At the NCAA level, MacDonald skated in 104 games, recording four goals and 17 assists. He played for five ECHL or AHL teams - appearing in all-star games on both circuits - before making his NHL debut.

MacDonald began the 2018/19 season with the Florida Panthers and scored an opening night goal during his NHL debut. After a brief two-game stint, he returned to the NHL two years later with Colorado. MacDonald missed a large portion of 2021/22 due to injury, but this year he as already matched his career high with 33 games played. A versatile contributor, MacDonald has lined up as both a forward and defenseman during his 76 career NHL games. He has two goals, 10 assists, and a +11 plus/minus differential.

When MacDonald next takes the ice, he will become the third Waterloo alumnus to skate for the Sharks. Joe Pavelski played in 963 regular season and 134 playoff games for San Jose between 2006 and 2019. Eriah Hayes took the ice 19 times for the Sharks in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

MacDonald is among a Black Hawks-record 17 alumni who have played in at least one NHL game this season. The group includes his Waterloo teammate Vinnie Hinostroza (Buffalo Sabres).
