M-Braves Take Opener from BayBears

PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves defeated the Mobile BayBears 7-4 in game one of a crucial five-game series at Trustmark Park Thursday evening. Cedric Hunter and Rich Poythress led the Braves with a hit, two RBI and two runs scored apiece. The series continues with game two Friday at 7:00 PM.

Mississippi (23-18, 62-48) scored seven runs one eight hits while Mobile (24-15, 66-42) plated four runs on six hits. Mycal Jones added two hits and two RBI for the Braves. Kyle Wren also had two base hits.

The M-Braves jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Hunter walked and Poythress belted a two-run home run into the M-Braves bullpen, giving the Braves an early edge.

Zach Borenstein tripled and scored on a Jon Griffin single to shallow center, cutting the M-Braves lead to 2-1 in the top of the fourth.

Kyle Kubitza singled and stole second to start the bottom of the fourth. Poythress walked and Daniel Castro delivered a RBI-double to center, making it a 3-1 game. Jones then followed with a two-run single to extend the Braves lead to 5-1.

Wren started the fifth with an infield hit. He took second on an errant pickoff attempt, and then Cedric Hunter blasted a two-run homer to right field to make it a 7-1 contest.

In the top of the seventh, Mark Thomas reached on an error and Taylor Harbin was hit by a pitch. Gerson Montilla followed with a single to load the bases. Todd Glaesmann then grounded into a double play, allowing Thomas to score and cut the Braves lead to 7-2.

Tom Belza doubled and moved to third on a ground out to start the eighth for Mobile. He then came in to score on Borenstein's ground out, cutting the M-Braves lead to 7-3.

Harbin launched a solo homer in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4.

As planned, J.R. Graham started and worked two innings for the Braves. He gave up a hit and struck out one before turning things over to Jason Hursh. Hursh (10-6) tossed six innings in relief to pick up the win. He gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walks while fanning five. Ryan Kelly (S, 3) came on in the ninth to record the final out and save the game.

Aaron Blair (2-1) gave up seven earned runs on seven hits, two homer and three walks. He struck out six batters in 4.2 innings pitched.

In game two of this five-game series with Mobile, the M-Braves send right-hander Greg Ross (4-1, 2.51) to the hill against BayBears righty Justin Fitzgerald (7-2, 4.13). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Gates open at 6:00 PM.
