Mississippi Braves News Release
Kodak, TN - The Mississippi Braves offense put forth its best offensive showing of the season, scoring multiple runs in five different innings to defeat the Tennessee Smokies 14-7 Monday night at Smokies Park.
The Braves (27-38) posted 14 runs on 18 hits, setting new season highs in both categories. They chased Chicago Cubs prospect Trey McNutt after just 3 1/3 innings with nine runs on nine hits.
The Smokies (31-33) scored first when Welington Castillo hit a two-run home run to right off of David Hale. From that point on, it was all Braves.
Joe Leonard's two-run triple tied the game in the second before Christian Bethancourt's first-pitch single scored Leonard to give the Braves a lead they would never relinquish. Tim Smith smashed his first home run for Mississippi, a ball that left the park to put Mississippi ahead 5-2.
Four more runs came across in the fourth to stretch the lead to 9-2, and that was it for McNutt. Hale lasted four innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out four and walking six. He left with the lead but didn't pitch enough innings to get the win.
Every Brave in the lineup contributed in some way, with 11 different players getting a hit and nine different players driving in a run. Joe Leonard and Christian Bethancourt led the way with three hits each. Smith drove in three and Leonard, Cory Harrilchak and Barrett Kleinknecht each drove in two.
The Smokies put up a fight in the ninth, scoring two, but Andy Russell slammed the door as the fifth pitcher of the night.
Brett Cammons picked up the win in relief, his first win of the season. He pitched two scoreless, hitless innings, striking out two. McNutt suffered his fifth loss for the Smokies. With the win, the Braves avoided the sweep and snapped a seven-game Smokies win streak.
The Braves have an off day on Tuesday before welcoming the Jacksonville Suns to Trustmark Park for the final home series of the first half. Game one begins at 7:00 PM CT on Wednesday night with Zeke Spruill (5-5, 3.74) facing Jacksonville's right-hander Omar Poveda (5-2, 4.34). Listen live beginning at 6:30 PM CT with the Vicksburg Toyota "Countdown to First Pitch" on 103.9 WYAB and online at MississippiBraves.com.
