Hultzen Named League's Top Pitcher for Second Straight Week

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. (JUNE 11, 2012) - The Southern League announced today that Generals' starting pitcher and 2012 Southern League All-Star Danny Hultzen was named Pitcher of the Week, for the second consecutive week.

Hultzen, 22, made one start this week on Friday at Jacksonville, tossing 8.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking just one batter. Hultzen has won his last three starts and has not allowed a run in his last 22.2 innings pitched. The lefty is 7-3 with a league-best ERA of 1.28 (10 ER, 70.1 IP). He also leads the league in opponent's batting average (.145), WHIP (0.92), while leading all starters with the fewest base-runners per 9.0 innings (8.70). He also ranks tied for second in the league in wins (7), second in strikeouts (67) and fourth in strikeouts per 9.0 innings (9.60). Hultzen was the Mariners first round pick (#2 overall) in the 2011 MLB draft out of Virginia. The Bethesda, MD native's last start of the first half is scheduled for Thursday night at Pringles Park, as Jackson takes on the Chattanooga Lookouts.

The Generals conclude their 10-game, two city road trip tonight in Jacksonville, with first pitch set for 6:05 CT. The Generals have the best record in the Southern League at 38-26 and lead the North Division over Huntsville by 4 1/2 games. Jackson's magic number to clinch the first half title is three.
