Mississippi Braves News Release

Birmingham, AL - The Mississippi Braves were stifled on Friday night at Regions Field by a fine pitching performance for Birmingham Barons' starter Erik Johnson, falling 3-0 in front of 7,159 fans.

Johnson (1-0) gave up just three hits over seven shutout innings, striking out six en route to his first win of the year. He outdueled Braves' starter Alex Wood (0-1), who allowed just two runs on five hits over four frames.

The only trouble Wood got into came in the fourth, his final inning. After a leadoff walk and a ground out put Trayce Thompson on second, Brandon Short came through with a single to plate the first run of the day.

That started a stretch of three straight Barons with a hit, as Dan Black singled to put men on the corners and Michael Blanke doubled to put Birmingham up 2-0.

In the fifth, the Barons tacked on another run off reliever Pat Egan. Back-to-back singles by Tyler Saladino and Marcus Semien put men on the corners, and Thompson drove in the run with a groundout, putting Birmingham up 3-0.

Taylor Thompson picked up his second save of the season for Birmingham, pitching a scoreless ninth.

Christian Marrero had a good day for the Braves at the plate, going 2-for-4 including a double in the ninth, but Thompson got Kyle Russell to fly out and Edward Salcedo to pop out to end the game.

The defeat gives the Braves their first series loss of the season.

Now the M-Braves try to salvage game four of the series on Saturday at 6:30 as Gus Schlosser (0-0, 1.80) takes the hill against Barons left-hander Scott Snodgress (1-0, 5.40). Listen live beginning at 6:00 PM CT with the "Countdown to First Pitch" on WYAB 103.9 FM and online at MississippiBraves.com.
