KODAK, Tenn. - A solid start by Eric Jokisch and timely hitting helped the Tennessee Smokies a 2-1 victory over the Chattanooga Lookouts Friday night at Smokies Park. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and improved Tennessee's record to 3-5 on the young season.
Tennessee wasted little time bringing the 3,690 fans to their feet, scoring on Chattanooga starter Andres Santiago in the first. Matt Szczur led off the game with a walk and scored two batters later on a single by Jae-Hoon Ha to give the Smokies a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, Rubi Silva led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error by Lookouts second baseman Omar Luna. Silva would come around to score on a single by Szczur to give the Tennessee 2-0.
The Lookouts would get a run in the top of the third inning on a Joc Pederson's solo homerun off Jokisch. It was Pederson's third homerun of the season.
Jokisch (1-0) pitched six strong innings, giving up a run on four hits and fanning three. Relievers Tony Zych and Zac Rosscup each pitched one inning of relief while Trey McNutt came in to notch his first save of the season.
Szczur swiped his third and fourth bases of the season in the fourth and seventh innings. The Smokies are a perfect now 13-for-13 on stolen base attempts this season.
