Alexander homers for fifth time in five games, Lugbauer ties league leaders with 12th home run BOX SCORE PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (23-24) hit three solo home runs and scored five of the final six runs of the game in a 7-5 loss to the Montgomery Biscuits (17-23) on Wednesday night at Trustmark Park.
After falling behind 6-0, CJ Alexander blasted a solo homer to the grass berm under the scoreboard in left center field to make it 6-1. The homer was Alexander's fifth in five games.
The third baseman went 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and an RBI. He has six straight games with an RBI, the longest active streak in the Southern League. Alexander is hitting .273 with nine home runs and 24 RBI this season.
Drew Lugbauer smacked a solo shot past the left-field bullpen and into the parking lot to pull within four at 6-2. The first baseman finished 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Lugbauer's 12th homer tied him with the Southern League leaders.
RHP Coleman Huntley III highlighted the pitching staff. Huntley III gave up no runs over 2 1/3 innings with five strikeouts. The right-hander holds a 2.39 ERA over 26 2/3 innings this season.
In the seventh, the M-Braves rallied with two outs.
Yariel Gonzalez hit a solo moonshot to right field to make it 6-3. Alexander, Lugbauer and Hendrik Clementina each hit back-to-back-to-back doubles to score two runs and pull it to 6-5. The M-Braves left runners on the corners in the inning.
Gonzalez celebrated his birthday along with Jacob Pearson who was out of the lineup. Since transferring to Mississippi on April 24, Gonzalez is batting .243 with six home runs and 14 RBI.
Clementina, the reigning Southern League Player of the Week, went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. The catcher improved to a .298 average with four homers and 15 RBI in 32 games this season.
Montgomery picked up an insurance run to lead 7-5 into the ninth. Trey Harris drew a leadoff walk, but the next three M-Braves batters were retired to end the game.
The third game of the road series is on Thursday at Trustmark Park. RHP Darius Vines (3-2, 4.27) makes the start for Mississippi against LHP John Doxakis (0-0, 16.20) for Montgomery. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting at 6:20 pm CT on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, First Pitch App, and MiLB.tv.
