M-Braves Defeat Blue Wahoos 6-1

PEARL, MS -- The Mississippi Braves defeated the Pensacola Blue Wahoos 6-1 Friday night at Trustmark Park, maintaining their lead in the Southern League South Division with nine games remaining in the first half. The series continues with game two Saturday at 6:00 PM.

Mississippi (33-28) scored six runs on 10 hits while the Blue Wahoos (22-38) plated its only run on nine hits. Pensacola also committed one error in the game. Dan Brewer and Tommy La Stella led the Braves offense with two-hit nights at the plate. Luis Durango led the Blue Wahoos with three hits at the plate.

The M-Braves took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Kyle Russell tripled and scored on a Cody Martin single to center field.

Christian Bethancourt reached on a error by the shortstop to start the fourth. La Stella followed with a single to left, and Christian Marrero delivered a RBI-single to center. Jose Martinez then singled to load the bases for a two-run single off the bat of Luis Nunez, extending the M-Braves lead to 4-0.

Pensacola made it a 4-1 game in the top of the fifth. Durango and Ryan LaMarre reached on two-out singles. Travis Mattair then singled to left, driving home Durango.

Brewer doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. He moved to third on Bethancourt's sacrifice bunt. La Stella followed with a RBI-double to left field, making it a 5-1 game.

Mississippi extended its lead to 6-1 in the sixth. Russell and Juan Jaime drew walks before Brewer delivered a double to center field, plating Russell.

Cody Martin (3-3) gave up one earned run on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five batters in five frames. Tim Crabbe (2-6) also went five innings for the Blue Wahoos. He gave up five runs, two earned runs, on eight hits while striking out four.

In game two of this five-game series, M-Braves right-hander Mitch Atkins (0-0, 0.00) counters Blue Wahoos lefty Ryan Dennick (2-6, 3.41). First pitch is slated for 6:00 PM. Gates open at 5:00 PM.
