Mississippi Braves News Release
Jackson, TN - Rich Poythress hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and that was all the Jackson Generals would need in holding on to a 2-0 win over the Mississippi Braves on Thursday night at Pringles Park.
With Nick Franklin standing on second base and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Poythress hit a Chris Masters offering onto the roof of the clubhouses beyond the left field wall for his first home run of the year. It put the Generals (10-5) ahead for good.
Masters pitched well in his third start of the season, allowing just four hits over his five innings, but he suffered his first loss of the season.
The M-Braves' bats, meanwhile, were held at bay all night by lefthander Danny Hultzen, last year's #2 overall pick in the June draft. Hultzen allowed just one hit, a Joe Leonard line drive single to lead off the top of the fifth inning.
Mississippi (5-10) had a chance to get on the board in the seventh when Hultzen walked two and relief pitcher Steven Hensley hit Adam Milligan with a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Matt Kennelly flew out to center field though, and the threat was passed.
Chris Jones, Andy Russell and Mark Lamm each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for the Braves on the night.
Now the Braves head to Birmingham, AL to take on the Barons, double-A affiliate for the Chicago White Sox. Game one is Friday at 7:05 PM, with LHP Luis Avilan (0-2, 2.08 ERA) on the hill for the Braves against right-hander Nestor Molina (1-1, 5.40).
