Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (18-17, 47-58) bashed the Birmingham Barons (53-51, 21-15) by a final score of 4-2 in Saturday night's series opener at Trustmark Park. First baseman, Tyler Marlette was the top producer for the M-Braves offense in Saturday night's victory. At the plate, Marlette went 1-for-4 with a 2B, and 3 RBI.
The M-Braves offense was backed by yet another top-notch pitching performance from RHP Bryse Wilson. Wilson, who is currently rated as the No. 14 overall prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization tossed 5.0 innings, allowing 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, and 3 BB while striking out eight. Wilson finishes the month of July with a 2-0 record and a 0.84 ERA. Wilson allowed just 3 R, issued 7 BB and struck out 42 over the course of 32.1 IP in July.
The M-Braves scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third inning when Alejandro Salazar laid down a sacrifice bunt that induced a throwing error from Barons third baseman, Bryant Flete, resulting in a run scored by Ray-Patrick Didder.
With the M-Braves leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, Marlette stepped to the plate and mashed a sharp line drive three-run double to center field. Daniel Lockhart, Salazar and Travis Demeritte all scored on the double by Marlette.
Alex Call produced the Barons first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning after he doubled on a ground ball down the left field line that stayed just fair, allowing Danny Mendick to score, making the score 4-1.
Birmingham added their second run of the game in the top of the eighth inning when Luis Basabe scored after Mendick grounded into a force out, making the score 4-2 which later proved to be the game's final score.
Mississippi's Wilson (3-5, 3.97) earned the win while Birmingham's Tanner Banks (2-2, 2.16) suffered the loss. M-Braves middle reliever Elian Leyva was credited with his first hold of the season after allowing just one run and striking out four in 3.0 innings pitched. M-Braves closer, Thomas Burrows who was recently promoted from High-A Florida, earned the first save of his Double-A career. Burrows entered the game in the top of the ninth inning and struck out two without allowing a hit or a run.
The Mississippi Braves and the Birmingham Barons will meet again at Trustmark Park on Sunday night (July 29th) for game two of the five-game series. After defeating Birmingham 4-2 on Saturday night, Mississippi currently leads the series 1-0. The M-Braves also remain undefeated when playing at home on Saturday night, improving their record to 7-0. LHP Michael Mader (2-2, 2.98) will take the mound for the M-Braves to start Sunday night's contest. Mader will go toe-to-toe with Barons RHP Alec Hanson (0-4, 6.03.)
