Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, Ky. - Joe Lytle's three-run home run in the third inning and A.J. Bumpass' grand slam in the seventh pulled the Florence Y'alls to within one run on both occasions. The team could not get even either time, and lost 8-7 at home to the Washington Wild Things on Tuesday.
Lytle's homer answered a four-run top of the first for the visiting Wild Things, as the Y'alls again found themselves behind in the opening frame. The Oklahoma native has gone yard in back-to-back games, after his solo shot in Quebec City Sunday.
Bumpass' grand slam looked to be a long pop out at first, hanging in the air for more than five seconds before flying over the left field fence in fair territory. The former Cincinnati Bearcat, who did not travel with the Y'alls on their Canadian road trip, is tied for the team lead with three home runs this season.
This game is the continuation of an unexpected trend for the Y'alls: producing large numbers of runs through home runs. The team's last ten runs, spanning three full games, have all come in that manner.
Shortstop Alberti Chavez, another impactful Y'all unable to travel, made his mark in the form of three hits. Chavez reached successfully his first three times to the plate, and upped his batting average to a team-leading .425.
As was the case in Edgar Martinez's first start, the righty settled in nicely after allowing a multitude of runs in the first inning. Martinez gave up only one hit from the second through fourth innings, striking out four batters. He takes the loss.
This game marked the first matchup between west division teams for the Florence Y'alls. The Y'alls and Wild Things meet eleven more times between now and season's end, with tomorrow's game beginning at 6:31 p.m.
