(Central Islip, N.Y.) - The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 8-3 on Friday night in the opener of a three-game series at Bethpage Ballpark. In the game, Dan Lyons reached on an infield single in the sixth inning for the 1,000th hit of his 12-year professional career, 732 of which have come in his eight seasons with the Ducks.

Somerset took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on RBI singles by Ramon Flores, Jermaine Curtis and Yovan Gonzalez. A two-out solo homer to right-center by Flores in the fourth off Ducks starter John Brownell increased the advantage to four.

Long Island closed to within three in the fourth on an RBI double to left from David Washington off Patriots starter David Kubiak. Jordany Valdespin then trimmed the deficit to 4-3 in the sixth with a two-out, two-run single down the left field line.

The Patriots stretched their lead back to three though in the seventh on an RBI single by Endy Chavez and a sac fly by Yovan Gonzalez. Flores' second homer of the game and an RBI double by Chavez in the ninth rounded out the scoring.

Kubiak (6-1) earned the win, tossing five innings of one-run ball, allowing eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. Brownell (5-8) took the loss, conceding four runs on 11 hits in six innings with six strikeouts.
