Central Islip, NY - The Somerset Patriots (8-2, 43-30) handed the Long Island Ducks (6-4, 36-37) an 8-3 beating in the series opener on Friday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

For the fifth consecutive ballgame, the Patriots scored first. On Friday, they struck for three runs in the third inning on RBI singles from Ramon Flores, Jermaine Curtis, and Yovan Gonzalez. The run-scoring singles were part of five straight hits in that third frame.

In the fourth inning, Flores came through again, propelling a pitch over the wall in right field for a solo home run to give Somerset a 4-0 lead.

Long Island responded in the bottom half, notching their first run of the game on an RBI double from David Washington.

Then, in the sixth inning, the Ducks made it a one-run game when Jordany Valdespin blooped a two-run single into left field, scoring Ramon Cabrera and Dan Lyons to make it 4-3.

However, the Patriots would put the game away for good after that, scoring the contest's final four runs. In the seventh, Endy Chavez cracked an RBI single before Yovan Gonzalez lifted a sacrifice fly to garner an RBI and make it a 6-3 Somerset lead.

Finally, more fireworks in the ninth. Ramon Flores launched a fastball over the second row of advertisements and out of Bethpage Ballpark for his second home run of the game. It capped off a performance that included four hits, three RBI, and three runs scored. Endy Chavez concluded the scoring with an RBI double later that inning, giving him three hits on the night and two RBI.

David Kubiak (6-1) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing eight hits and one run while striking out eight. Kubiak is undefeated on the road this year, improving to 5-0 away from home.

Altogether, Patriots pitching registered 15 strikeouts tonight and allowed only one walk.

John Brownell (5-8) took the loss for the Ducks, working six innings and giving up four runs on 11 hits with six strikeouts.

The 2018 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Monday, July 23rd when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The game includes Bark In The Park Night. For tickets, visit www.somersetpatriots.com.
