Barnstormers Catch Break, Grab Series Opener
July 20, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers got one of their best breaks of the season in the sixth inning and took advantage of the momentum change in the seventh for a 3-2 victory over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Friday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for Lancaster and snapped an eight-game road losing streak.
With Southern Maryland leading, 2-0, in the bottom of the sixth, Brooks Hall (7-2) walked a pair of batters, and Cory Vaughn reached on a two-out throwing error to load the bases with one out. Former Atlantic League All-Star Craig Maddox ripped a line drive right to K.C. Hobson at first, and Hobson was able to beat Vaughn to the bag, doubling him up for the final out.
Hobson turned it around and led off the top of the seventh with a single to left field. Josh Bell walked, and Anderson De La Rosa laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Frias drove both home with a line drive single through the right side to tie the game. The inning continued to build against Sam Runion (0-4) as Darian Sandford drew a walk, and Tyler Bortnick was hit by a pitch for the second straight inning, loading the bases. Blake Gailen drove in the tiebreaking run with a sacrifice fly to center.
Southern Maryland botched a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Angelys Nina led off with a double into the right field corner. Teodoro Martinez bunted up the first base line, and De La Rosa's throw to third was late. However, Edwin Garcia tried to bunt Nina home from third, did not get the ball far from home plate, and De La Rosa tagged out the lead man.
Matt Marksberry got Frank Martinez to fly out to right, and Kevin Munson ended the threat with a strikeout of Jon Griffin.
Scott Shuman held the lead with a perfect eighth, and Matt Reynolds was able to work around an infield single by Teodoro Martinez in the ninth for his 18th save.
Southern Maryland scored off Hall in each of the first two innings. Griffin's sac fly to center plated Garcia in the first, and Vaughn raced home on a wild pitch in the second. Darian Sandford later threw out Maddox trying to score on a Teodoro Martinez base hit.
The Barnstormers take on Southern Maryland again on Saturday evening. John Anderson (0-2) gets the nod for the Barnstormers against Casey Delgado (4-6). Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Bell made his second start at third base...The other came on June 27 at Sugar Land...Bortnick tied for the league lead in the HBP column...He has been hit 10 times...The Barnstormers added steals by Frias, Bortnick and Trayvon Robinson and now have 160 on the year in 74 games.
