Lynx, Sponsors "Support The Fort" This Season

July 29, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

In conjunction with our Dasher Board sponsors and a host of other private and public contributors, the Augusta Lynx are taking an active role in helping support the men and women of Fort Gordon with our "Support The Fort" program.

During the 2004-05 Season, all of our corporate Dasher Board partners will also be the title sponsor of one of 23 "Support the Fort" nights, to be held on Friday and Saturday night games throughout the season.

As the title sponsor on one of these nights, each Dasher Board partner will bring 500 Fort Gordon soldiers to the game. The troops will receive free tickets and bus transportation to and from the game. Our sponsors also will be given an opportunity to address the soldiers on the ice during intermission and thank these troops for their service to our nation.

The Lynx "Support the Fort" program comes at a critical time when Fort Gordon desperately needs the community behind it in the face of military base closures across the nation. The Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission may list Fort Gordon as one of the bases scheduled for possible shutdown in the near future, and the Lynx and many of our corporate partners hope to play a part in helping to ensure that Fort Gordon continues to play a vital role in the CSRA.

"Fort Gordon is synonymous with Augusta, and losing the Fort would be devastating to our community," Lynx Assistant General Manager Rob Mueller said. "We feel our Support the Fort program is a perfect way to help rally community support for Fort Gordon this season, while at the same time, showing the men and women of Fort Gordon a good time at our games and, more importantly, that we truly appreciate their service to our country."

According to the CSRA Alliance for Fort Gordon, the Fort is the CSRA's largest employer, with a workforce of more than 12,500 military and nearly 5,000 civilians. The Fort's economic impact of $1.2 billion goes directly into area retail stores, banks, real estate and other businesses.

What's more, 28 percent of employed Richmond County residents and 14 percent of Columbia County residents have jobs because of Fort Gordon. Nearly 13,000 military retirees live in the CSRA, generating $214 million in military retirement income. The impact spreads to Augusta's surrounding counties as well, including Aiken, Edgefield, Burke, Jefferson and McDuffie.
