Tulsa Drillers News Release
A crowd of over 7,700 that included over 4,000 school kids, made a lot of noise at Drillers Stadium Monday morning, but the Drillers' bats were kept silent. Lance Lynn, making his Double A debut, and three relievers combined to blank the Drillers on only six hits as Springfield won the finale of a three-game series 5-0. The loss snapped a season high three-game winning streak for Tulsa.
Lynn, a first-round supplemental draft choice last year by St. Louis, was impressive in his first Double A appearance. The University of Mississippi product worked five shutout innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six.
The Cardinals bullpen was just as impressive, as Tulsa got only one hit over the game's final four innings.
Springfield got the only offense it needed with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second off Tulsa starter Keith Weiser. Andrew Brown reached on an error by first baseman Jeff Kindel, and Tony Cruz doubled to put runners at second and third. With two outs, Lynn helped his own cause. In his first at-bat as a professional, the pitcher doubled to the warning track in center field to drive in both runners and give the Cards a 2-0 lead.
The Redbirds scored two more runs in the fourth. Brown began the rally again with a leadoff single. Cruz followed with his first home run of the season to make it 4-0.
Brown also played a part in the final run of the game. He led off the sixth with another base hit and eventually scored his third run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Antone DeJesus.
The Drillers missed chances to avoid the shutout. They put the leadoff batter on base in each of the first six innings but failed to get a runner home. For the game, Tulsa stranded nine runners.
Weiser's record falls to 1-2 with the loss. The lefthander pitched 5 2/3 innings, surrendering nine hits and five runs (3 ER). The pitcher was the only Tulsa player with more than one hit, finishing a perfect 2-2 with two singles. For the season, Tulsa pitchers are now hitting .323 in 31 at-bats.
Andy Graham followed Weiser to the mound and did not allow a run in 1 1/3 innings. Xavier Cedeno pitched two perfect relief innings.
The Drillers will now take to the road for a four-game series against the Arkansas Travelers in North Little Rock. Esmil Rogers (0-1, 6.05 ERA) will pitch Tuesday night's opener, while the Travs will send Mike Anton (0-2, 5.51 ERA) to the mound. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 7:10PM at Dickey-Stephens Ballpark.
