Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Tulsa Drillers got their second straight win over the Cardinals, shutting out Springfield by a score of 3-0 on Saturday night at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa.
Starting pitcher Samuel Deduno (2-1) had the Cardinals off-balance, as he worked six shut-out innings, allowing just three hits. The right-hander struck out seven, while walking two.
Springfield starting pitcher Ryan Kulik, who struggled in his Double-A debut earlier in the week, had a nice follow-up effort, giving the Cards five productive innings.
Kulik (0-1) allowed a run in the first, when Darin Holcomb's sac fly plated Chris Nelson for a 1-0 lead.
The Cards' left-hander wasn't really tested again until the fifth, when Tulsa got their second run. Daniel Carte opened the inning with a single and two batters later, scored on an RBI double off the bat of Deduno, making it 2-0.
Eddie Degerman came out of the overworked Springfield bullpen and gave the Cards three good innings, allowing a run on two hits. Another sac fly from Holcomb brought home Jeff Kindel in the eighth for a 3-0 lead.
Springfield was held to just three hits all night long, but none over the final four innings, as the Tulsa bullpen was near-perfect.
Andrew Johnston worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for Tulsa, earning his fifth save of the year and second in as many nights.
Daniel Descalso's 14-game hitting streak came to an end on Saturday, as he finished 0-for-4.
Springfield (12-10) will send Lance Lynn to the mound on Sunday afternoon in Tulsa, as he makes his Double-A debut. The former first-round pick's mound opponent will be Keith Weiser (1-1), with game time scheduled for 2:05pm.
The Cards will return to Hammons Field after their eight game road trip, taking on the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on Tuesday, May 5th, in the opening game of a four-game home stand. Tuesday night is a Cinco de Mayo Celebration and Semper Fi Night at Hammons Field. Game time is 7:10pm. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com.
