THE HILLCATS: The Hillcats lost to the Salem Red Sox 6-3 last night...The first five Red Sox batters in the first inning reached based, however, the leadoff man was picked off at first base, and bases loaded double play ended the inning with only one run scoring...Salem went up 2-0 in the third when OF Brandon Jacobs hit his 10th home run of the season...C Braeden Schlehuber doubled in a run and scored a run in the fourth to tie the game, and the 'Cats took a 3-2 when he added an RBI groundout...Salem would end up scoring the final four runs of the game and take the opener 6-3...The Hillcats are now 17-18 in the second half and are tied for second place in the Northern Division, 1.5 games out of first...
VS. SALEM: Lynchburg is 10-8 against the Red Sox this year...Most recently they won three of four in a home and home series July 11-14...The 'Cats won last two games of that series 1-0 at Lynchburg City Stadium...At LewisGale Field this season the 'Cats have allowed over five runs per game on average, as opposed to surrendering 3.64 runs per home contest against Salem...This is the final regular season series between these two clubs...
SHUTTING OUT SALEM: The Salem Red Sox have been blanked seven times this year...Only the Winston-Salem Dash (5) and Frederick Keys (6) have been shutout less...The Hillcats have held them scoreless in three of their last six meetings...Note that all three of those shutouts came in Lynchburg...The Red Sox are hitting .288 at home as opposed to .266 on the road this season...Overall they have the second-best team average (.276), scoring the second-most runs per game (5.10)...
EARLY GOODBYES: Still with five and a half weeks left in the season, the Hillcats just wrapped up their season series with the Potomac Nationals Thursday night (10-10), and are playing the Red Sox for the final time this weekend...They still play every other team in the league for two more series each except the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, who they play in the final weekend the season...
SNOWBALL EFFECT?: The 'Cats committed three more errors last night...They have been charged with nine mistakes over their last four games now...That gives them 119 on the season which is only less that the Winston-Salem Dash (121) and the Potomac Nationals (121)...Interestingly enough, the Hillcats and Dash have locked up playoff spots already this season...During this stretch, 12 of the 20 runs allowed by Lynchburg have been unearned...The 'Cats have allowed 74 unearned runs this year...Only the Frederick Keys (81) have surrendered more...
MULTI-LANDONI: INF Emerson Landoni went 2-for-4 with an RBI last night...He is now 4-for-7 over the last two nights, recording just his third and fourth multi-hit games of the season in consecutive games...He is lifted his batting average (.207) above the 'Mendoza Line' last night for the first time sine Independence Day...He went 1-for-3 and was batting .205...He hit his second homer of the season, seventh of his career, Thursday night...Currently one shy his career-best three home runs in 2010...He was originally signed by the Florida Marlins in 2006, and played in the Venezuelan Summer League...He did not play in 2007, before getting signed again by the New York Yankees in October, 2007... 2012 marks his sixth season as a pro...
SCHLE' RIDE IN JULY: C Braeden Schlehuber went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI last night...He now has 40 RBI this season, a career-high surpassing the 37 he totaled with Low-A Rome in 2009...Currently on a four-game hitting streak, he has also hit safely in 13 of his last 16 games...He is batting .324 (22-for-68) in July with six doubles, two triples, and 13 RBI; all totals are monthly season-highs...His season average is at .298, which would rank ninth in the league but he does not qualify...
STREAKING SCHLOSSER: RHP Gus Schlosser has not allowed a run in his last 23.1 innings pitched...He threw his first complete game shutout Monday night, going nine innings for the first time in his career...He gave up one hit in eight nearly perfect innings last Wednesday, and tossed six scoreless the outing prior to that...That's 23 innings plus the final out from four starts ago...He now boasts an ERA of 2.99, third-best in the league...Has the most wins (11), second in innings (129.1), fifth in strikeouts (101), tied for second in WHIP (1.06), and second in batting average against (.237)...After blanking the Nationals Monday night, he is 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA against them...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Miguel Celestino was signed as an international free agent in November 2005...Spent 2006-07 with the DSL Red Sox...Posted an ERA under 3.00 while striking out 96 in 99 innings...Made stateside debut in 2008 with Short-season Lowell...Went 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 15 appearances, 11 starts...Started 2009 with Low-A Greenville but was sent back to Lowell after posting a 7.04 ERA through nine appearances, four starts...Finished the season with Lowell (6-1, 2.92)...2010, went back to Greenville...Went 4-5 with a 3.68 ERA in 15 starts...Missed over two months from beginning of June to the beginning of August...Did not play in 2011 due to injury...2012, went 4-5 with a 3.58 ERA with Greenville...Called up to Salem July 5...Vs. Hillcats; (0-1) 7ip, 6h, 1ER, 1BB, 6K in one start 7/13...
