Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
SIMPLY THE BEST: After Elisaul Pimentel threw his best game of the year a few days ago, Brooks Pounders did the same on Friday night at Frawley Stadium as the Wilmington Blue Rocks defeated the Carolina Mudcats, 6-2.
BROOKS BROTHER: Pounders entered Friday with an ERA over 6.00. He then tossed a career-high-tying six innings and allowed a season-low single score. The man who averaged more than four walks per nine innings did not issue a free pass and whiffed six.
IF YOU AIN'T FIRST: With the win, the Blue Rocks' maintained sole possession of first place in the CL North, extending their lead to 1.5 games over the field. It marks the first time the Rocks have lived in the penthouse by themselves on consecutive days since starting the second half of 2011 with a 2-1 mark.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Scoring four runs or more and having 10+ hits have been the magic numbers for the Blue Rocks this season. When scoring at least four runs, they are 35-15 (.700). When they have 10 base knocks or more, they hold a 22-9 (.710) record. Wilmington has scored at least four runs in seven straight games, going 6-1 in that time. The franchise had not turned that trick since a seven-game run from May 12-18, 2011. It has not done so in eight straight games since Aug. 3-10, 2010.
MY BAD: The Blue Rocks made a pair of errors on Friday night. This came after they only made two total errors in two of their last 13 games.
BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE: He did it again. For the 12th time in 24 games, Matt Fields crushed a home run. It was part of a 2-for-4 night as his sixth straight game with a hit crested his average to a season-best .311. He has been particularly powerful this month, hitting to a triple slash of .358/.435/.821 with 12 homers and 18 RBIs over 24 games played. His dozen dingers lead the team and place him in a tie for seventh in the league.
HOMEBOY: After their eighth home win in nine games, the Blue Rocks are two games above .500 at Frawley with a 26-24 record.
COMEBACK KIDS: Friday marked the Rocks' 25th come-from-behind win of the season. That means Wilmington has trailed in 53% of its victories.
SOUTHERN COMFORT: Last night kicked off a stretch of 15 straight games against Southern Division squads. Even with four consecutive wins over teams from the South, the Rocks own a 22-40 (.355) record in interdivisional play. That is in stark contrast to the 25-17 (.595) mark in intradivisional competition. Once this long run against the South concludes, Wilmington's schedule ends with 18 of the final 22 contests against its brothers in the North.
ROSTER MOVES: Before the game, the Kansas City Royals announced two roster moves for the Blue Crew. Outfielder Roman Hernandez has been placed on the disabled list (eye). The Cuban defector has not played since July 16 at Myrtle Beach. In a corresponding move, right-hander Leondy Perez was activated off the disabled list. After three rehab outings in the Rookie AZL, he makes his first Wilmington appearance since June 8 tonight. He lasted four frames in his final rehab outing on Monday.
IN SUSPENSE: The Frederick Keys have announced that Thursday's suspended game will be made up at 5 p.m. on Aug. 20 at Harry Grove Stadium. A seven-inning game will follow.
