Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD - Steven Souza Jr. broke a 1-1 deadlock in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run home run to down the Keys in the final frame as Frederick fell 3-1 to the Potomac Nationals in front of 6,169 fans at Harry Grove Stadium.
The Keys were unable to rally in the bottom of the ninth, falling in defeat to Potomac to even up the series as their record falls to 16-19 in the second half of the year.
Relief pitcher David Walters, who gave up the home run to Souza Jr., is charged with the loss as he falls to 2-6 on the year with a 3.80 ERA.
Keys starting pitcher Tim Berry and the Nationals' Robert Gilliam were entwined in a pitcher's duel with each pitcher only surrendering one run before they exited.
In fact, the Keys struck early against Gilliam, scoring in the first inning when Jeremy Nowak singled with runners on first and second to put the Keys on top 1-0.
Unfortunately for Frederick, Gilliam put the clamps on their offense the rest of the way as he gave up no runs thereafter.
Yet the Keys' Berry was just as good, not giving up a run until his last inning of work. Overall, he struck out seven and walked just one while giving up five hits through 5 2/3 innings.
It wasn't until the sixth inning that Potomac was able to score on Berry and they did so with two outs. After Ricky Hague singled, David Freitas followed that up with a double, which allowed Hague to score all the way from first to tie the score at one.
The score would stay tied until Souza Jr. came to the plate in the ninth inning against Walters. His two-run blast over the center field wall would be the difference and send the Keys home in defeat.
Frederick will try and take the rubber match tomorrow on Christmas in July Night when RHP Tyler Wilson (5-4, 3.58 ERA) takes the mound against LHP Matt Grace (6-9, 5.51 ERA).
First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM and live coverage starts at 3:40 PM on 1450-AM The Source.
