THE HILLCATS: Sunday the Hillcats beat the Potomac Nationals 7-6...Two costly errors for Potomac led to unearned runs for Lynchburg, one in the first and another in the sixth...Starter Cory Rasmus (1-5) recorded his first win of the season, tossing five scoreless frames before surrendering four in the sixth and leaving after five and one-third innings pitched...The Hillcats sit in fourth place in the Carolina League Northern Division, now 10.5 games back of the first place Wilmington Blue Rocks...
VS. WINSTON-SALEM: The Hillcats are 1-3 against the Dash in 2011...The two teams first met in Winston-Salem, May 5-8...Despite hitting .296 as a team through the four-game series, the 'Cats took game dropped three of four, after winning the opener...Last season the Dash won the season series 16-4 against Lynchburg...The former Braves Advanced-A affiliate, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, nearly split the season series nine out of 20 from Winston-Salem a season ago...
BIG WIN: Last night, the Hillcats won 7-6 snapping a five-game losing streak...It was the longest losing streak the 'Cats had suffered since dropping 10 in a row April 10-20...The win was also significant in that it was a one-run game and at home...Lynchburg claims the worst record in both categories...Even with last night's win, the Hillcats are just 4-8 in one-run games this season and 5-12 at City Stadium...The home record probably most discerning, just a .294 winning percentage, nearly .150 points lower than the next worst, the Winston-Salem Dash and Kinston Indians are both 11-14 (.440) at home...The stats don't lie either..Away from the "Hill City" this season the Hillcats have hit .267 as opposed to .244 at home, and pitchers have posted a 3.51 ERA, over a run and a half less than at City Stadium (5.19)...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Eight members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes RHP Arodys Vizcaino (7), SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...Vizcaino was tabbed the 93rd best prospect in all of baseball by BA as well...
EVERYONE HAS AN OFF DAY: OF Todd Cunningham went 0-for-5 batting leadoff last night...It was just the fifth game out of 18 while batting first, that Cunningham has gone hitless...He is still batting .361 (26-for-72) when batting first, and has scored 17 runs and stolen five bases...Batting elsewhere his other 22 games, he has hit just .220 (18-for-82), scored six runs, and stolen two bases...He now leads the team in runs scored (23), and is tied the team lead in steals (7) with Andrelton Simmons, and is second in walks (12) behind just Joe Leonard (14)...He's also been hit by the pitch seven times, leads team, and boasts a .375 on base percentage...Last night's hitless effort, snapped a five-game hitting streak and a six-game run scored streak for the leadoff man...
LYNCHBURG NEEDS YOU: The season is just past a quarter over for the Hillcats, and they have already had 37 different players active on the roster in 2011...Three original Hillcats have been promoted to AA-Mississippi, with one returning in RHP Eliecer Cardenas...Injuries have been the bigger factor, as 10 players have hit the disabled list after donning a Hillcats uniform this season...The latest was LHP Dimasther Delgado, who hit the DL today...RHP David Hale will take Delgado's roster spot, returning to the Hillcats after spending nearly a month on the shelf (4/27-5/23)...C Jace Whitmer also voluntarily retired today bringing the grand total for the Hillcats' transactions this season to 39 since the beginning of April...
SCHLE'S SLAMS: C Braeden Schlehuber launched the first Grand Slam for the Hillcats this season in the fifth inning Monday night...He also doubled in two runs in the fourth giving him a career high six RBI on the night...Tuesday night, Schlehuber was knocked out of the game after a collision at the plate with Kinston INF Justin Toole...Toole slid in head first at home, his shoulder meeting Schlehuber's left leg...Schlehuber had to be helped off the field, and wouldn't return to action...
BETCHA CAN'T HIT JUST ONE: INF Phil Gosselin had three hits last night and now has 13 multi-hit games on the year, three more than he has single-hit games this season...His 13 multi-hit games are tied for the most on the team with SS Andrelton Simmons, who by the way also had three hits last night...Gosselin now has six multi-hit games in his last 10, and during that span he is batting .366 (15-for-41)...Currently he is on a three-game hit-streak...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER : RHP Andre Rienzo was signed as a Minor League Free Agent out of Sao Paolo, Brazil, on November 17. 2006...Went 8-4 with a 3.65 ERA for Kannapolis in 2010...Had two complete game shutouts in 2010...Ninth in strikeouts in the South Atlantic League with 125...led all White Sox minor league pitchers in strikeouts...Pitched five innings, giving up two runs, one earned, against Lynchburg on 5/6...Currently 1-1 with a 2.74 ERA...
