Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Lynchburg, VA- The Lynchburg Hillcats and Winston-Salem Dash took a 1-1 pitchers duel into 11 innings Monday night. In the end, it was the Hillcats celebrating a walk-off win as Joe Leonard provided a sacrifice fly to win the game, 2-1.
Lynchburg starter Arodys Vizcaino had another strong start this season, pitching seven shutout innings against the Dash. He struck out five batters, while only allowing three hits. After giving up a single to Ian Gac in the fourth inning, Vizcaino retired the last 11 batters he faced.
The Hillcats were able to get the edge in the fifth inning. With one out, Barrett Kleinknecht hit a double off the wall in center field. Shawn McGill followed suit by doubling to right-center, scoring Kleinknecht and giving the Hillcats a 1-0 lead.
After Vizcaino departed, Andy Russell came into the game for the Hillcats. With one out, he walked Austin Yount. The next batter, Daniel Wagner, hit a slow chopper to second. Phil Gosselin charged the ball, and made a backhand flip to second. Andrelton Simmons grabbed the ball with his bare hand and, in one motion, fired the ball to first for the double play.
Russell gave up a leadoff double to Tyler Saladino in the top of the ninth inning. Jose Martinez followed with a groundout to short, however, it was hit slow enough to allow Saladino to advance to third. Blaine Sims came in to face the lefty Jared Mitchell, and struck him out. Eliecer Cardenas came in to face the righty Gac. A slider hit the dirt and got away from McGill, letting Saladino score to make it 1-1. Cardenas recovered and struck out Gac, and after the Hillcats couldn't score in the bottom of the ninth, the game would go to extras.
After exchanging scoreless frames in extras, Adam Milligan hit a one-out single to center. Todd Cunningham came in to pinch run for him. On a full-count pitch to Joey Terdoslavich, Cunningham took off for second and Terdoslavich lined a single to right. Cunningham's jump allowed him to reach third on the play. On the first pitch of his at-bat, Joe Leonard lifted a high fly ball to center field. Jared Mitchell settled underneath and fired a throw to the plate, but Cunningham was able to slide in safely, giving the Hillcats their first walk-off win of the year.
Cardenas, who pitched a scoreless 10th and 11th, picked up the win to improve his record to 1-1. Brandon Kloess took the loss to move to 1-2.
