LumberKings Waste Opportunities, Fall to West Michigan 5-1

Clinton, IA - Thursday night at Ashford University Field was a night of wasted opportunities for the LumberKings and seized opportunities for the Whitecaps. In the 5-1 West Michigan win, Clinton was 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position and West Michigan was 3 for 7. The LumberKings left ten runners on base.

A night after Jordan Shipers no-hit the Whitecaps, they wasted no time getting on the board. Back-to-back doubles with two outs in the opening inning by Aaron Westlake and Jeff McVaney gave West Michigan a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, McVaney led off with a single. The next batter, Jeff Holm, belted a pitch into the Lumber Lounge for a two-run homer and a 4-0 lead.

The Whitecaps came up with another clutch hit in the seventh inning when Eugenio Suarez hit a ground ball just past the reach of LumberKings third baseman Ramon Morla for another run.

Clinton made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning against West Michigan closer Dan Bennett. Jabari Blash and Guillermo Pimentel both struck out swinging to start the inning. Catcher Toby Demello walked and Anthony Phillips hit a routine roller out to second that Jared Reaves booted. With runners at first and second, Kevin Rivers singled to right field to score Demello and make it 5-1.

Jamal Austin came up with Ji-Man Choi representing the tying run in the on deck circle. Austin was in command as Bennett fell behind in the count 3-0 but came back to make it 3-2 before getting Austin to ground out to second to end the game.

Jeff Ferrell started for West Michigan and picked up his third win of the year in five shut out innings. The right-hander struck out six as he evened his record. Trevor Miller pitched seven innings but was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 5-6. The two teams meet for the rubber match on Friday night in Clinton. Clinton sends right-hander Seon-Gi Kim (2-1, 1.56) to the mound to face West Michigan right-hander Wilsen Palacios (9-6, 3.41). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. Fans in attendance will receive a stadium cup courtesy of the Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency and WQAD-TV.
