Burlington Bees News Release
BURLINGTON, Iowa - The Burlington Bees (43-46, 11-9) took a late lead in a pitchers' duel with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (50-40, 12-8), but let the lead slip and lost 3-to-2. The Bees came into the Thursday's game with a 38-3 record when lead after seven innings, but watched Seth Frankoff allow two runs to score in the eighth.
Raul Alcantara hadn't earned a win at Community Field in seven starts in Burlington. He owned a record of 0-6 and an ERA of 9.66 in that time, but Alcantara experienced a makeover on Thursday.
The right-hander was nearly perfect after the first inning. Alcantara allowed a leadoff single to Ryan Brett to star the game and watched as Brett stole second base. The speedy leadoff hitter eventually scored when Drew Vettleson grounded into a double play. The double play was Alcantara's league-leading 17th and helped the youngster avoid a rough inning.
Alcantara was nearly spotless over the next five innings. He went on to pitch six innings and only allowed four hits and one earned run. He did not record a strikeout, but refrained from yielding a walk. He remains 0-6 at Community Field, but Thursday's start was the first time Alcantara did not allow a run in a home start.
The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the second when Nick Rickles hit a solo home run. Rickles' sixth homer of the season looked more significant as neither team produced another extra-base hit until the bottom of the seventh.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Rashun Dixon blasted a solo dinger over the center field wall. Dixon's seventh home run gave the Bees a 2-to-1 lead after seven innings. Dixon is averaging a home run about every five games. The slugger had gone six games without a homer.
Unfortunately Seth Frankoff couldn't hold onto the lead in the top of the eighth and instead allowed two walks, and then a double to Brett that scored both runs. The Bees fell behind 3-to-2 after the eighth and went down in order in the ninth.
The Bees have now lost five consecutive games to the Hot Rods dating back to last season. They'll try to elude the sweep in game three which starts at 6:30 p.m.
